About Copa Paraguay

Copa Paraguay History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Copa Paraguay is a KO tournament organized by the Paraguayan Football Association. It was launched in 2018 and welcomes all teams from the Paraguayan professional football system. In its initial seasons, the winner was granted a spot in the Copa Sudamericana, but the APF changed that rule and decided to give the champions a place in next year’s Copa Libertadores. In case the winner has already qualified, the runners-up will be given that opportunity. Additionally, the winner of the tournament also qualifies to play the Supercopa Paraguaya.

The tournament sees lower-tier teams playing a preliminary stage, where four teams will make it to the next round. Once there, those teams are joined by 36 clubs from all categories, except the Primera División. This stage will see 20 winners out of each KO match, and they will be joined by the Primera División squads in the third round. Teams go on to play single-match ties, with penalties being used to declare a winner in the event of a draw after 90 minutes. The title match is played at a neutral venue.

Coverage of this competition has been awarded to Tigo Star. The company has secured broadcasting rights to this competition until 2025, with exclusive coverage of the tournament both on TV and via streaming services.
