About FIFA Confederations Cup
The FIFA Confederations Cup is a quadrennial tournament run by football’s governing body. All six champions from football confederations around the globe take part in this competition, joined by the host nation and the World Champion. This competition is used as a test for all World Cup hosts since all games are played in half the venues scheduled to be used in any upcoming World Cup.
The tournament was initially created in Saudi Arabia, where four teams played the King Fahd Cup. In 1997, FIFA took control of the tournament and decided to celebrate it every two years. The FIFA Confederations Cup changed to its current format in 2005 and served as a trial for Germany, who would host the 2006 WC.
There have been eight FIFA Confederations Cup since the tournament changed its name. Brazil has won four titles, followed by France with two trophies to their name.
The 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup was held in Russia. Germany entered the competition as World Champions and took the title home by beating Chile (CONMEBOL’s champion) with a 1-0 score in the final match.
The 2021 edition of this tournament will be held in an Asian country yet to be elected. Weather conditions in Qatar during the summer prevent this tournament from being held there, and the host nation will be named two years before the competition.
Did you know? Ronaldinho and Mexican legend Cuauhtémoc Blanco are the joint-top scorers in this competition. Both footballers scored nine goals.
