About Frauen-Bundesliga

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Frauen-Bundesliga is the highest-division women's football league in Germany. Founded in 1990, it is organized by the German Football Association (DFB) and adopted a uniform structure after merging the northern and southern divisions in 1997.

The season typically runs from August or September to May, featuring 14 teams starting from the 2025-26 campaign, an increase from the previous 12. Each side plays the others twice, home and away, in a double round-robin format.

The team with the highest points at the end of the season is crowned champion and awarded the title of "Deutscher Meister." The top three teams qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the leading European club competition in women's football.

Relegation affects the bottom two clubs in the standings, sending them to the 2. Frauen-Bundesliga, Germany's second-tier women's league. However, during the 2024-25 season, only the lowest-ranked outfit was relegated to facilitate the transition to a 14-team league.

In the early years, TSV Siegen dominated, winning four of the first six titles, including the first two seasons. From the late 1990s through the early 2000s, FFC Frankfurt rose to prominence. The 2010s saw VfL Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich become the dominant forces, with each club claiming the title every year from 2012 to 2024—Wolfsburg seven times and Bayern five.
