About Premier League

The Belarusian Premier League, also known as Vysheyshaya Liga, saw the light in 1992. It is currently ranked in 21st place of UEFA’s coefficient system.

This league experienced a number of changes before reaching stability, mainly in the number of teams that play the tournament. There were seasons where 17 teams played for the title, while some others were played by just eleven sides. The league now operates under a promotion-relegation system, with two teams losing their category as top-tier teams every year. Two teams will be promoted from the Belarusian First Division to complete the number of teams needed to play each campaign. The league is played between March and December to avoid extreme weather conditions.

All sixteen teams will face each other twice every season to determine the champion. Added to that, this league offers the right to play in European competitions, with the champion getting to play the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League. Meanwhile, the second, third and fourth-ranked teams will enter the preliminary stages of the UEFA Europa League.

BATE Borisov claimed the title in the 2018 edition of this league, which also saw their massive winning streak continue. BATE also earned the right to play the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League. Furthermore, Shakhtyor, Dinamo Minsk and Vitebsk made it to the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Europa League. Unfortunately for them, Belarusian clubs Smolevichi and Dnepr Mogilev were relegated to the Belarusian First Division.

The 2019 season in the Belarusian Premier League will begin on March 29 and will come to an end on December 1, 2019. Clubs Slavia Mozyr and Energetik-BGU earned their promotion from the Belarusian First Division as champions and runners-up, respectively.

Did you know? BATE Borisov is the most winning club in the Belarusian top-flight, with 15 titles to their name. BATE has won 13 titles in a row, currently holding a streak that has been going on since 2006.
