About ORF Sport Plus
ORF Sport + is an Austrian sports channel owned and operated by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, or ORF. It was launched on May 1, 2006 as ORF Sport Plus, but it was later stylized as ORF Sport + on October 26, 2011.
ORF Sport Plus picked up sports coverage made by TW1, a former sports channel owned by ORF. The standout feature for ORF Sport + is that it has carried on for a while with TW1’s tradition of broadcasting marginal sports with both live events and magazine shows. The channel was discontinued in 2010 due to budget cuts, but an intervention by lawyers resulted in a major investment and in the transformation of the channel into a specialized sports channel.
ORF Sport + has also covered sports such as athletics, American football, badminton, ice hockey, field hockey, tennis, volleyball, football, gandball, dancing, equestrian, swimming, and fistball. For quite some time, ORF Sport + was unable to cover “premium sports” such as the Austrian Bundesliga or Formula One, since media authorities in Austria ruled against this due to the large coverage these sports have in regular media reports.
Speaking about football, ORF Sport + has aired Copa Intertoto games, and old matches featuring the Austrian National Football Team, and more.
ORF Sport + may be owned by a public television network, but it can only be watched on cable and satellite TV providers.
