Broadcast Rights

Competitions available on Movistar Laliga 8

UEFA Europa League
UEFA Europa League (2024-2027)
Telefónica has secured the broadcast rights for the UEFA Europa League in Spain, covering the 2024/25, 2025/26, and 2026/27 seasons. The deal, part of a broader acquisition that includes the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Youth League, and UEFA Europa Conference League, involves a total expenditure of 960 million euros, equating to 320 million euros per season.
More details This acquisition aligns with Telefónica's existing strategy of maintaining comprehensive football rights within the Spanish market, with Telefónica Audiovisual set to provide these broadcasts to its residential segment customers.
La Liga
Spain - La Liga (2021-2027)
Spanish telco Telefónica has successfully re-negotiated its broadcast rights for LaLiga, covering Spain and Andorra. This renewed TV deal follows a regulatory re-evaluation of their initial agreement with LaLiga spanning from 2021 to 2027. The re-acquisition, effective from the latter half of the 2024/25 season to the end of the 2026/27 season, is in response to the Spanish competition regulator CNMC's concerns.
More details CNMC had contended that Telefónica's acquisition of pay TV operator Digital+ constrained it from holding rights for a period exceeding three years. Under the new arrangement, valued at approximately €1.29 billion, Telefónica may continue broadcasting five LaLiga games per matchday through its digital subscription platform Movistar+. It has also agreed to exclusively cover three match weeks in both the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons. The financial commitment involves €250 million for the latter half of the 2024/25 season, increasing to €520 million for each of the following full seasons. This revised contract aligns Telefónica's rights period with DAZN's existing contract for consistent LaLiga coverage.

About

Movistar Laliga 8 History, Coverage, Features

Movistar La Liga is a pay television channel owned by Telefónica and operated by Movistar +. The channel was launched on August 16, 2019 and broadcasts its content in Spanish language. The network was created to cover most football activity taking place in the top football categories in Spain.

Since its launch, Movistar has divided coverage of La Liga and the Spanish Segunda División with other free-to-air networks, but as far as nine La Liga games have been available in one matchday via this network. When it comes to Segunda División games, Movistar La Liga has aired up to nine games on a single matchday, with two more being broadcast by free-to-air networks.

Movistar La Liga 8 is the seventh overflow channel to Movistar La Liga. This channel usually airs the eighth most relevant match taking place at any given moment including La Liga or the Spanish Segunda División.

Movistar La Liga 8’s football coverage has been limited to air games from domestic league competitions since its parent company has destined another channel to cover games for other European tournaments.

Movistar La Liga 8 broadcasts all its content in UHD format, although the same feed is downscaled to reach HD users and those who keep watching television on a Standard Definition feed. The channel has been available in most of the Spanish territory and in neighboring countries such as Andorra.
