MDR Fernsehen History, Coverage, Features
MDR Fernsehen is a German regional television channel, owned and operated by public TV broadcaster Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk. It was launched on January 1, 1992 as a member of the ARD. MDR Fernsehen broadcasts its content to the regions of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, but it can also be watched in Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg.
This channel offers a variety of regional shows, which add up to their news coverage of current affairs in Germany. The network also shows cultural and historical programs, weather reports, films, and magazine shows. Speaking about sports, the channel has offered comprehensive coverage of the Bundesliga and all sports played in Germany via its dedicated sports newscasts, although the network has not owned any broadcasting rights to any league.
MDR Fernsehen has frequently been named as the third most-watched TV channel for the ARD. After its initial launch in standard definition, the channel added an HD feed on January 1, 2017, although this feed may not be available in some cities.
