E! history, coverage, features
E!, which stands for Entertainment Television, is an English-language entertainment, pop culture and lifestyle television network in USA. It is owned by NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group and it broadcasts in high definition (1080i), with a downscaled 480i feed available for standard definition. E! was first launched as Movietime in July 1987, and it is available nationwide in over 90 million homes.
The network’s programming over the years has heavily consisted of TV series and reality shows, red carpet events, entertainment news and movies. Although the network is not meant to appeal to hardcore soccer fans, E! has aired live English Premier League games in the past. After NBC scooped the rights to the EPL prior to the start of the 2013-14 season, the national broadcaster needed to spread coverage of the games on its family of channels. Premier League coverage would usually be carried by NBC’s sports-themed networks; however, with 10 matches played simultaneously on Matchday 38, NBC took the habit of extending live EPL TV coverage to its other networks. This included E! and its sister channels Bravo, Oxygen and Syfy. Many cable TV providers may have E! available in their channel line-ups; nonetheless, exact channel numbers may vary based on the location. The official E! mobile app for Android and iOS lets subscribers watch the network’s content live, as well as stream movies and access videos and full episodes on demand.
Users looking to access E! streams on their devices may be required to authenticate themselves via a participating TV provider. The list of valid providers includes Spectrum and Xfinity, in addition to the TV platforms mentioned above. Casting of E!’s streams from mobile devices to smart TVs may also be done via Chromecast. Furthermore, content from other NBCUniversal-owned networks may be available on the app. Popular on-demand content from E! may be streamed directly from NBC’s website as well. Alternatively, subscribers may opt to watch E! live on partner over-the-top (OTT) streaming platforms in USA, like AT&T TV Now. Other streaming services such as Fubo TV, Hulu Live TV, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV and YouTube TV also support the channel.
