BBC Northern Ireland history, coverage, features
BBC Northern Ireland is the main public television broadcaster in Northern Ireland, owned by the British Broadcasting Corporation. It was launched on July 21, 1955. BBC Northern Ireland is one of three BBC national regions along with BBC Scotland and BBC Cymru Wales. BBC Northern Ireland provides TV, radio, online and interactive television content, with the TV branch operating two channels: BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC Two Northern Ireland.
The network has aired similar content to the one aired by BBC One and BBC Two in England, although some of their content has been produced at their headquarters in Belfast. Local shows are often given priority over other shows produced by the company. Most of the local content generated by BBC Northern Ireland is aired on BBC One Northern Ireland.
In the past, BBC Northern Ireland’s sports coverage has centered its efforts on two disciplines: rugby and football. Back in 2010, this network acquired broadcasting rights to air the Celtic League rugby. Later in the decade, BBC Northern Ireland aired games for the Irish League football.
Both BBC Northern Ireland channels are available on both SD and HD. Some of its content can also be found on BBC’s iPlayer service.
