La Major League Soccer (MLS) è il livello più alto del calcio professionistico maschile negli Stati Uniti e in Canada. È stata fondata nel 1993 e ha iniziato a giocare ufficialmente tre anni dopo, nel 1996.
Il campionato è sanzionato dalla United States Soccer Federation (USSF) e, a differenza di altri campionati di calcio in Europa e altrove, non opera secondo un sistema di promozione-retrocessione. Piuttosto, in modo abbastanza simile ad altri importanti campionati sportivi americani come NBA, NFL, MLB e NHL, tutte le squadre, indipendentemente da dove finiscono in classifica, non vengono retrocesse a un campionato di livello inferiore la stagione successiva.
La MLS è divisa in due conference: la Eastern e la Western Conference. Le squadre giocano sia l'una contro l'altra all'interno delle rispettive conferenze, sia contro le squadre della conferenza avversaria. La stagione di solito inizia tra la fine di febbraio e l'inizio di marzo e si conclude a ottobre, con la squadra con il miglior record complessivo della stagione regolare che vince il Supporters' Shield.
Dopo la stagione regolare, gli annuali playoff della Coppa MLS si svolgono tra ottobre e novembre e presentano le migliori squadre classificate sia nella Eastern che nella Western Conference. La squadra che vince questo torneo post-stagionale vince la Coppa MLS.
Nel corso degli anni, la MLS è diventata una destinazione prevedibile per molti giocatori di tutto il mondo che si avvicinano al tramonto della loro carriera. Negli ultimi tempi, ha visto volti come Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Gareth Bale e Lionel Messi lasciare tutti i club europei per giocare nella MLS.
