De Premier League, vaak aangeduid als de EPL (English Premier League), wordt wereldwijd beschouwd als een van de meest iconische en prestigieuze nationale voetbalcompetities. Opgericht in 1992, toen de topclubs in Engeland zich afsplitsten van de Football League, heeft de Premier League zich sindsdien ontwikkeld tot een onstuitbare kracht in de prachtige sport.
In de competitie, waarbij elk seizoen drie teams degraderen en drie promoveren, komen in totaal 20 teams in actie. Clubs als Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal en Liverpool overheersen het veld. De competitie volgt een dubbel ronde systeem, waarbij elke club in totaal 38 wedstrijden speelt in het seizoen - 19 thuis en 19 uit. Dit resulteert in een spannende en intense competitie die meestal loopt van augustus tot mei. De competitie heeft ook verschillende iconische managers gekend, zoals Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho en Pep Guardiola. Ferguson leidde de Rode Duivels naar acht van de eerste elf titels.
Wedstrijden worden uitgezonden in meer dan 200 landen, wat het een van de meest bekeken sportcompetities wereldwijd maakt. De toegankelijkheid voor een internationaal publiek heeft ook een gevarieerde fanbase aangetrokken. De Premier League is financieel gezien een van de rijkste voetbalcompetities, met lucratieve televisiecontracten, sponsoring en commerciële partnerschappen. Dit stelt clubs in staat om top talent uit de hele wereld aan te trekken en te behouden.
De uitzendgeschiedenis van de Premier League heeft sinds haar oprichting ingrijpende veranderingen ondergaan. In 1992 was de beslissing om de uitzendrechten aan Sky te verlenen een doorslaggevend moment, dat de weg vrijmaakte voor het financiële succes van de competitie. Aanvankelijk was betaaltelevisie een relatief niet getest fenomeen op de Britse markt en het idee om live voetbal op televisie te bekijken was nieuw. Sky heeft echter, mede dankzij de hoogwaardige kwaliteit van de competitie, bijgedragen aan een opmerkelijke stijging van de waarde van de tv-rechten. De inkomsten uit de overzeese uitzendrechten werden gelijk verdeeld over de 20 clubs. Het televisielandschap evolueerde verder met de introductie van nieuwkomers zoals Setanta Sports, en de totale inkomsten uit deze deals overstegen op dat moment £ 2,7 miljard, wat de Premier League-clubs enorm ten goede kwam.
Internationaal heeft de Premier League haar bereik exponentieel uitgebreid. Gedurende de geschiedenis heeft de Engelse topcompetitie de weg gevonden naar de schermen van enkele van de grootste omroepen ter wereld, waaronder Fox Sports en NBC Sports in de VS, SuperSport in de Sub-Sahara-regio en Bein Sports in de MENA-regio (Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika).
In de Verenigde Staten had ESPN2 twee afzonderlijke periodes waarin ze Premier League-wedstrijden uitzonden, eerst tussen 1996 en 1998 en vervolgens opnieuw van 2009 tot 2013. Fox Soccer zond daarentegen Premier League-wedstrijden uit van 1998 tot 2013. In 2013 nam NBC Sports de rechten op de Premier League over, waarbij ze een niet-Amerikaanse aanpak benadrukten en deskundige commentatoren inhuurden. Ze introduceerden verschillende studioprogramma's en verworven zelfs de rechten tot het einde van het seizoen 2027-28.
De populariteit van de Engelse topcompetitie is door de jaren heen aanzienlijk toegenomen, met één van de belangrijkste factoren de introductie van live-streaming-opties, zoals Peacock. De streamingdienst van NBC begon exclusief een aantal Premier League-wedstrijden aan te bieden op dit platform, voornamelijk gedurende de seizoenen 2020 en 2021. Bovendien hebben NBCUniversal's Spaanstalige netwerken Telemundo en Universo bijgedragen aan het verbreden van de live verslaggeving van deze competitie naar een groter publiek in de VS.
