RAI 1 History, Coverage, Features

RAI 1—formerly known as Rai Uno—is a public digital terrestrial television channel owned by the Italian government and operated through RAI. The generalist network was launched in January 1954 and broadcasts in standard definition (576i); however, a high definition version of the channel known as Rai 1 HD was launched in October 2013 and it broadcasts in 1080i quality.

Both SD and HD versions of RAI 1 are available on satellite in Italy and neighboring countries, as well as online locally on Rai’s over-the-top (OTT) service. Since its existence, Rai 1 has covered multiple sporting disciplines, including Formula 1, football, and volleyball.

More about RAI

Radiotelevisione italiana, better known as RAI, is a public service radio and television broadcaster in Italy. It was created in August 1924 by the Italian government. RAI networks are available in other European countries, including Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino, Slovenia, and Switzerland.

RAI operates several free-to-air TV networks, including Rai 1, Rai 2, Rai 3, Rai 4, and Rai 5. Some of its channels focus on specific types of programming, such as Rai Movie for movies, Rai News24 for news, and Rai Sport for sports coverage. The quality of broadcasts on RAI ranges from SD to 4K UHD depending on the network. In addition to national and regional networks, RAI operates international services in various regions of the world.

Radio channels operated by RAI in Italy cover a wide range of programming, including contemporary music, news and talk shows. For years, they have been accessible on FM, AM, satellite, or the web. In the past, RAI has acquired media rights to various sports tournaments, many of which have been related to football due to the participation of Italian national teams at different levels.

International FIFA competitions that have been covered by RAI networks include the FIFA Men’s and Women’s World Cup, UEFA European Championship, UEFA Nations League, as well as UEFA youth tournaments. RAI has also provided coverage for FIFA friendly matches involving Italy’s side.
