The Danish Superliga is the top-tier football category in Denmark. It was established in 1991 as a substitute to the Danish First Division. The league kicked off with ten teams fighting for the title, but the number has been updated ever since with fourteen or twelve participant clubs, which has changed the format of the competition from time to time.
This league works under a promotion-relegation system and with a different format than that of the top European leagues. Teams are required to play 22 regular season games prior to being divided in two groups. The top six teams will go on to battle for the championship and European competition spots, while teams ranked on the lower half of the table enter a Qualification round, which will determine the two teams that are relegated for the upcoming season.
Some of the most notable teams from the Danish Superliga have come from the city of Copenhagen. Initially, KB dominated Danish football until its merger with FC Kobenhavn, one of the country’s most successful clubs up to this date. The latter have earned praises in Europe for their continuous presence in different UEFA Champions League editions.
Danish football has become quite popular in Europe and in other countries, thanks to its broadcasting rights agreement with the Viaplay Group, which has made the league available to fans in the UK and in Denmark on TV (via TV3 Sport) and online (on Viaplay). In other countries such as the United States, league matches can be streamed on OneFootball.
