The Chelsea forward entered the history books for his exploit on Friday night.

French striker Olivier Giroud made history in his country's EURO 2020 qualifier against Moldova on Friday. A half-volleyed goal ensured that the 30-year-old became the third most prolific goalscorer in French national team history.

Les Bleus' first major test on the Road to EURO 2020 started off on a good note after Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Three minutes later, fellow World Cup winner Raphael Varane doubled the lead for the host by getting on the end of the Atletico Madrid striker's corner kick.

Olivier Giroud was called into action seven-minutes from half-time where successfully caught a cross from Blaise Matuidi with a half-volley. Watch the goal below (geo-restriction may apply):

Giroud's feat on Friday night means that he has now scored 34 international goals for France, making him the joint-third top goalscorer in his country's history with David Trezeguet. Above the pair is the legendary Michel Platini and Thierry Henry with 41 and 51 goals respectively.

While both records are very much within the reach of Giroud, the Chelsea striker has hinted at retiring from the national team after the Euros. Speaking to French news outlet RTL ahead of Friday's encounter with Moldova, he said: "EURO 2020 will be my final adventure with France.

"After that, I will have to make way. Then, Kylian Mbappé will become the legitimate No. 9 of the French national team."

While the honor is evidently a huge one for the Paris Saint-Germain youngster, he reminded fans as to why the belief in his talent remains by scoring France's fourth goal against Moldova in the 87th minute. However, the visitors grabbed a consolation goal through Vladmir Ambros two minutes later.
