The Red Devils failed to progress from the third round of the Carabao Cup following a shock defeat at home to Derby County.

A dramatic penalty shootout at Old Trafford saw Manchester United crash out of this year's Carabao Cup at the hands of Frank Lampard's Derby County. The Red Devils started off well and were put in the driving seat inside the 3rd minute via Juan Mata's goal.

Nonetheless, the fortunes of the Premier League outfit took an unexpected turn after Harry Wilson grabbed the equalizer for the Rams 14 minutes into the second-half with a free-kick from 30-yards out. The biggest twist was initiated when goalkeeper Sergio Romero was sent-off.

The 31-year-old Argentine shot stopper who assumed the No.1 spot for the night after Jose Mourinho opted to rest David De Gea handled the ball outside his penalty area in the 67th minute. Jack Marriott nearly stole the show for Derby by scoring five minutes from full time. That lead was, however, relinquished with Marouane Fellaini heading home to tie the game in the 95th minute.

With the game entering penalty shootouts, Frank Lampard's side – who converted all their spot kicks - secured progression into the fourth round after Phil Jones made a mess of Manchester United's eighth attempt.

The defeat meant that Manchester United has now lost each of its last five penalty shoot-outs in all competition. The Red Devils have been the villians thrice in the League Cup, once in the FA Cup, and once in the FA Community Shield.
