Match Preview

Two sides who have experienced disappointment in the recent past will be determined to get back on track as they lock horns at Bologna's Stadio Renato Dall'Ara on Friday evening. For Italy, the Azzurri were denied a chance to feature in their first World Cup since 1958 after failing to find a way past Sweden in the play-offs, and that saw some massive changes, starting from the top.

Roberto Mancini is now the man on the bench, and he has decided to take a big gamble by incorporating  some unfamiliar faces such as youngsters like Roma's Nicolo Zaniolo, Cagliari duo Alessio Cragno and Nicolo Barella and Fiorentina's Marco Benassi. In addition, Giorgio Chiellini, who initially retired after Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup, has been recalled to the squad after reversing his decision and is now the eldest member of the team.

What will, though, probably be of the most interest, is the inclusion of Mario Balotelli. Since Cesare Prandelli's departure, no Azzurri coach has opted to include the enigmatic striker, who has not featured for the national team since the 2014 World Cup. However, Mancini, who worked with the 28-year-old during his time at Manchester City, has finally decided to recall him from the international wilderness as with 14 goals in 35 appearances, he has scored more goals than any other option Italy currently have as a striker available. Fans will be naturally hoping that Mancini's faith in "Super Mario" will pay off as Italy hope to return to the international scene at the upcoming EURO 2020 competition.

As for Poland, they did manage to make it to the World Cup, and given their high ranking and relatively comfortable quartet, there were some who expected them to at least make some saves. However, they exited without making any impact whatsoever, and now will feel they have something to prove after their really disappointing showing in Russia this past summer.

Robert Lewandowski in particular will be one player really disappointed with Poland's results as he failed to have any sort of impact, and at 30, that arguably could have been his only chance to grab what would have been his first-ever World Cup goal for his country.

The visitors will face two daunting records in this game. Will they be able to overcome both as they take on an Azzurri side determined to relaunch themselves on the international stage?
