Bayern's slow start of the season has prompted all sorts of comments from fans and former players. Croatian coach Niko Kovac has faced harsh criticism, but there seems to be one former player that still believes he can turn things around.
That legend is none other than Lothar Matthäus. The polivalent footballer spoke on Sky about the Bavarians' current streak, where he blamed the players for the team's woes in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League.
"These players have to step down from their pedestals and assume their roles. They are Bayern's employees and they have to answer to the team's needs. Bayern is a top-caliber club and all of our players should feel blessed to have the chance of being a part of a team such as this one," Matthäus stated.
Then, the former midfielder took aim at James Rodríguez, who has openly criticized Niko Kovac's tactics due to his lack of regularity under the Croatian boss.
"James is offended when he's not part of the starting lineup, but when he gets the nod, he acts like he was not a part of the team," Matthäus said.
Before the interview came to an end, Matthäus sent one more message to Kovac, which also served as a pun against Bayern execs.
"Niko Kovac thinks about football all day long. He's totally identified with the club, but he has to pay a price. The team should have added more players during the offseason. Our squad needs to be rejuvenated, that's a mistake that those in charge of the club have to assume. They needed to think about the future and try to sign players such as Bale or Griezmann," Matthäus concluded.
