The Group Stage of the UEFA Europa League kicks off on Thursday, and Villarreal will try to show their credentials as title contenders when they face Steven Gerrard's Rangers.

The Spanish side enters this game having won only one of their La Liga games prior to this match. Luckily for them, the Yellow Submarine claimed that win just last Sunday, which means that Javier Calleja's men will try to build up on that victory.

On the other side of the pitch, Stevie G's men have only lost one of their five most recent competitive games, but that loss came against bitter rivals Celtic. The Scottish side will return to a European competition after an eight-year absence, which will make a few of their footballers a bit nervous when they enter Estadio de la Cerámica.

Both teams will have to deal with some key absences. Villarreal will not be able to rely on Santiago Cáseres or Bruno Soriano, both out due to injury. Added to that, Jaume Costa will have to serve a pending ban he picked up last season.

Regarding the Scottish side, Gerrard will have to prepare his squad without six players. Gareth McAuley, Ryan Jack, Jamie Murphy and Jordan Rossiter have been ruled out due to injuries, while Alfredo Morelos and Jon Flanagan are out after being suspended.
