Two domestic powerhouses will lock horns in the Champions League as Benfica welcome Bayern on Wednesday, September 19th.

Match Preview

Benfica come into their Champions League game having recorded a 2-1 win over Rio Ave in the Taca da Liga and so far are unbeaten in the Primeira Liga. Given how the Eagles have dominated the domestic footbal landscape as a member of Portugal's "Big Three", however, that should hardly be a surprise.  Nonetheless, Rui Vitoria's men did have to secure their spot in the group stages through two rounds of play-offs after finishing as runners-up last season, and after beating both Turkish outfit Fenerbahce and Greek side PAOK, were placed into a quartet including Bayern, Ajax, and another Greek opponent, AEK Athens.

Of the three foes, it will naturally be Bayern who will trouble Benfica the most. Fortunately for the Portuguese side, the Germans are not going to interfere with their hopes of getting beyond the round of 16 this time around - should they secure a top two spot in their group. However, the Bavarians have proven to be a real nuisance for Benfica in the past, thwarting them in their last eight meetings and even more concerning for Benfica fans, the German behemoths are unbeaten in their last five trips to Lisbon.

Can they overcome their Bayern hoodoo? That is naturally something Rui Vitoria will be hoping to address as he takes on the serial Bundesliga champions, who are now led by Niko Kovac. As per usual, Bayern are cruising along in the Bundesliga without much fuss, but domestic glory has become par for the course in Munich. They will be hoping to overcome their own personal hoodoo in the Champions League this season and make it to their first final since 2013, but that probably will see them take on Spanish opposition at some point in the latter stages, which has proved to be Bayern's stumbling block time and time again.

In the meantime, though, Bayern's focus will be to top their quartet, which they are naturally expected to after struggling last season. Benfica, for their part, lost all of their games back in the 2017/2018 edition which was a shocking outcome for a team of their caliber. They obviously will be looking to avoid that kind of embarrassing result this time around, but they will be fighting an uphill battle against history when the Bavarians come to town on Wednesday.
