The Catalans were vindicated by the tech despite initially falling behind due to its call.

The Spanish FA's decision to include the VAR in all competitive matches in the new season showed glimpses of being rewarding after being put to test in the Super Copa de Espana. It was Sevilla who fortuitously benefited from the judgment and took an early lead after an initial offside call on Pablo Sarabia's strike was overturned.

An earlier decision by the referee suggested that the forward was in an offside position before slotting home Lucas Muriel's pass following a quick counter-attacking move. A review of the incident, however, indicated that the 26-year-old forward was indeed onside, prompting the referee to rescind his initial verdict.

With barely a minute left to the end of the first-half Barcelona had a VAR going in their favor. The Blaugrana were given an equalizer by Gerard Pique who pounced on the rebound from Lionel Messi's freekick from an onside position despite the Sevilla players appealing otherwise.

The VAR was not the only innovation flaunted in the night's game as for the first time in the cup game's history, the final was played outside Spain as a one-legged affair. The Stade Ibn Batouta in Tangier, Morocco was the venue that hosted the clash between Sevilla and Barcelona.
