Netherlands Eredivisie Report: Week 17 (Dec 3-5)

Saturday, Dec 4 2010
PSV crowned themselves winter champions with a 5-2 win over Heracles Almelo and Ajax did not manage to win a league match at home for the third time in a row.
If you look at the 5-2 result only PSV grabbed an easy win against Heracles Almelo on Saturday, but they did not. It had to come down to a Hercales red card in the 70th minute to hand PSV the opportunity to grab the three points they needed to crown themselves winter champions.

Ajax just does not seem to be able to find the rhythm in their own Amsterdam Arena this season. The ‘Godenzonen’ drew 1-1 against NEC on Saturday, thus posting their third consecutive home match without a win in de Eredivisie.

On Friday Albert Ferrer took his first loss in three matches as Vitesse coach on a deep-frozen pitch at the Euroborg Stadium in Groningen. The home team easily won 4-1, grabbing three points to add up their total of 33 from 17 matches, which marks their best first half of the season in club history.

Netherlands Eredivisie Preview: Week 17 (Dec 3-5)

Thursday, Dec 2 2010
FC Twente take on neighbors De Graafschap on Saturday and the Tukkers will play their first match without Bryan Ruiz since the Costa Rican striker arrived at the club in the summer of 2009.
FC Twente won 4-2 at NEC last week, but they lost Bryan Ruiz with a severe knee injury in that match. He will be out until the winter break. The prolific Costa Rican striker never missed a match since he arrived at FC Twente at the beginning of the last season. The ‘Tukkers’ only lost four matches with Ruiz on the pitch. The match against De Graafschap may show how coach Michel Preud’homme and his squad are going to deal with his absence on Saturday.

IF PSV win their home match against Heracles Almelo on Saturday, they will be league leaders halfway the season for the first time since 2007/2008. The Eindhoven club were league leaders at the halfway point 18 times before and when they were, they grabbed the title 15 times.

Eredivisie top scorer Björn Vleminckx will try to help NEC to its first ever Eredivisie win at Ajax. The club from Nijmegen will visit Amsterdam for the 35th time in the Eredivisie and never won away at Ajax.

Netherlands Eredivisie Report: Week 16 (Nov 26-28)

Saturday, Nov 27 2010
NAC Breda defeated PSV 4-2 on Friday. FC Twente came alongside the league leaders when they won 4-2 at NEC and Ajax is back in title contention after their 2-0 win at VVV-Venlo.
Ajax is back in the Dutch title race. The ‘Godenzonen’ grabbed a non-convincing 2-0 win at VVV-Venlo on Sunday, thus taking advantage of PSV’s Friday loss at NAC Breda. PSV and FC Twente are on top of the table with a three point gap to Ajax.

FC Twente bounced back after two consecutive league losses with a 4-2 away win against NEC on Saturday. NEC were a tough nut to crack for the title holders, who were kicked out of the Champions League due to their 1-0 defeat at Internazionale on Wednesday. Their win in Nijmegen put them alongside PSV at the top of the table.

NAC Breda managed to beat the league leaders in the Eredivisie for the second time in two weeks on Friday when they set aside PSV (4-2) on Friday. NAC remained undefeated at home against PSV for the fifth consecutive season. Only one club (Willem II) managed to set a longer unbeaten home streak (8) against PSV in Eredivisie history.

PSV will give the Eredivisie weekend a head start, when the League leaders visit NAC Breda on Friday, a difficult fixture because the Eindhoven team lost 2-1 in Breda last season. NAC count on their noisy home crowd for support. NAC will have to do without defender Jens Janse and forward Fouad Idabdelhay and PSV will miss Marcus Berg.

Willem II set a new Eredivisie record losing their seventh consecutive home match against De Graafschap on Wednesday.

Roda JC and FC Utrecht put up an exciting match in Kerkrade on Wednesday. FC Utrecht got a well deserved draw when they got back from the first half 1-0 by Ruud Vormer.

Netherlands Eredivisie Report: Week 15 (Nov 20-21)

Saturday, Nov 20 2010
The top fixture between Ajax and PSV ended in a goalless draw on Saturday, which left PSV on top of the league because FC Twente lost their second consecutive league match at home against AZ.
The big fixture against PSV did not hand Ajax any answers on Saturday. The match ended in a goalless draw and the main question will be as always: what is Johan Cruijff going to say in his Monday morning newspaper column in ‘De Telegraaf’.

FC Twente lost their second consecutive league match on Saturday and the title holders are now three points behind league leaders PSV. Last week Twente lost 2-1 at NAC and this week AZ defeated them 2-1 in Enschede.

Feyenoord lost again. “Yes, we are a nominee for relegation and that is a shame for our club”, coach Mario Been said on Sunday. His team were beaten 2-0 at FC Groningen and dropped to the 16th place on the ranking. “But I’m sure we are going to stay in the Eredivisie. I am a fighter. As a football player I was not, but as a trainer I am.”

Netherlands Eredivisie Preview: Week 15 (Nov 20-21)

Friday, Nov 19 2010
“This probably is the most important week of the season,” Ajax-coach Martin Jol said on Friday. The Amsterdam squad will meet league leaders PSV at home on Saturday.
“This probably is the most important week of the season,” Ajax-coach Martin Jol said at the pre-match press conference before the fixture against PSV on Friday. After two consecutive league losses against ADO Den Haag en AZ respectively the match against number one ranked PSV seems to be Ajax’ last chance to keep up title hopes this season.

After their well-deserved 2-0 home win against Ajax last week AZ face another top-three club: FC Twente. The ‘Tukkers’ lost the league lead last week, when they got beaten 2-1 after being 1-0 up until the 80th minute at NAC Breda. It was the first defeat of the title holders this season.

Netherlands Eredivisie Report: Week 14 (Nov 14)

Friday, Nov 12 2010
Ajax lost their second League match in a row at AZ on Sunday while PSV took over the League lead from FC Twente when they easily overcame Excelsior on Saturday: 4-1. Twente lost their first match of the season at NAC Breda: 2-1.
Ajax are in trouble. The Amsterdam team took their second loss in a row and their third in the season at AZ on Sunday: 2-0. “Fysically and mentally we simply were not good enough,” coach Martin Jol said. “It’s very disappointing because we actually had to win here.”

PSV took over the League lead from FC Twente when they easily overcame Excelsior on Saturday: 4-1. Twente lost their first match of the season at NAC Breda: 2-1. NAC thus erased all good memories the ‘Tukkers’ had about Breda, where they played their title match on the final matchday of last season (2-0).

The relegation battle between Willem II and De Graafschap was abandoned due to heavy rain in the 56th minute on Friday. “The players told me that the conditions were too bad to continue playing and both coaches agreed. That made my decision to quit a lot easier,” said referee Eric Braamhaar. When the match will be finished is not yet decided.

Thursday, Nov 11 2010

FC Twente returns to the stadium where they grabbed the title with a 2-0 win against NAC Breda on the final day of last season. The title holders won their last six League matches and they are the only unbeaten team this season in de Eredivisie.

PSV will take on Excelsior, who were thrown out of the National Cup Tournament by the amateur team of Sparta Nijkerk on Wednesday. Title holders and league leaders FC Twente will visit NAC Breda.

Ajax will visit AZ on Sunday. The ‘Godenzonen’ are under a lot of pressure after their 2-1 Champions League defeat at AJ Auxerre last week and the following 1-0 home loss against ADO Den Haag. Ajax’ godfather Johan Cruijff smashed the club policy in his weekly newspaper column on Monday, writing that the complete board of directors should step down immediately.

Netherlands Eredivisie Report: Week 13 (Nov 5-7)

Saturday, Nov 6 2010
A poorly playing Ajax lost to ADO Den Haag at home thanks to a beautiful Wesley Verhoek goal and FC Twente holds on to league lead with a 2-1 win after conceding an early goal against surprising Excelsior in Enschede on Saturday.
After wins in big matches at PSV (1-0) in the Eredivisie and Werder Bremen (2-1) in the Champions League FC Twente seemed uninspired to take on Excelsior at home on Saturday. The title holders started on a false note when Leen van Steensel put the visitors 1-0 up in the second minute, but Twente fought back and managed to win 2-1 in the end.

Third ranked Ajax fell behind four points when they suffered their second home defeat of the season against ADO Den Haag on Sunday. PSV managed to stay in Twente’s footsteps with a hard fought 2-1 win at FC Utrecht. Both clubs finished the match with ten men due to red cards.

On Friday VVV-Venlo increased their gap with rock bottom Willem II to seven points with a 4-1 defeat at their rivals in the battle against relegation. Willem II faced an early red card for captain Arjan Swinkels after a handball in his own box. “There is a big difference between a handball on purpose and a ball which accidently hits your arm”, Swinkels said to his own defense. In the second half the match was suspended for twelve minutes because of abusive chanting by the home crowd towards referee Kevin Blom.
