Netherlands Eredivisie Preview: Week 34 (May 15)

Saturday, May 14 2011
Ajax and FC Twente play for the Dutch title on Sunday. A once in a lifetime experience. Never before in the Eredivisie history the championship was decided in a match between the top two of the table on the last match round.
The Ajax and FC Twente players are looking forward to the match of their lives on Sunday, when the Eredivisie season comes down to the last match in Amsterdam. The winner will be crowned champions, the loser will end up third and lose the chances for a Champions League ticket. Twente will retain the title if they manage a draw in Amsterdam. Last Sunday Ajax lost the Dutch Cup final to Twente 3-2 in extra time.

Four players have the experience of a Championship match. Wout Brama, Theo Janssen, Bryan Ruiz and Peter Wisgerhof were present when Twente took the title on the last match day of the previous season, when the Tukkers beat NAC 2-0. No Ajax player played a championship match before, but Gregory van der Wiel has the experience of a World Cup final with the Netherland under his belt.

Netherlands Eredivisie Preview: Week 33 (May 1)

Friday, Apr 29 2011
Sunday afternoon is show time in the Eredivisie. All nine matches of the penultimate match round will be played at the same time. The top three clubs FC Twente, Ajax and PSV are only three points apart.
FC Twente can secure the title on Sunday if the club beat Willem II, Ajax lose at sc Heerenveen and PSV drop points against Vitesse. If Twente grabs the championship, they will be the first club apart from the Dutch traditional top three (Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV) to retain the title since the beginning of the Eredivisie in the 1956/57 season.

PSV threw away their chances losing 3-1 to Feyenoord last week. If Twente and Ajax both win their penultimate match the club from Eindhoven is eliminated in the title race. On the last match day Twente travels to Ajax for what probably will be the decisive game. If Ajax grab the title, it will be their thirtieth in club history.

After 32 match rounds Twente and Ajax have 68 points and 67 points respectively. Last season they ended up champions and runners-up with 86 points and 85 points respectively.

Netherlands Eredivisie Preview: Week 32 (Apr 22-24)

Friday, Apr 22 2011
The Eredivisie is heading for a thrilling climax. Never before in the history of the Dutch top flight the difference between the number one and the number three was just one point with only three matches to go.
FC Twente drew 1-1 against De Graafschap last week, thus handing PSV the best chances to win the Dutch title with only three matches to go. Number three Ajax also hope the win their first Dutch championship since 2004. Twente and PSV are level on points but the Eindhoven team hold the advantage of a better goal difference.

Twente kick off the third last match round in The Hague against fifth ranked ADO on Friday. The title holders will have to wait until Sunday to see the other title contenders play. Ajax are host to Excelsior and PSV travel to Feyenoord, who are eager to take revenge for the devastating 10-0 loss in Eindhoven earlier this season, even if that means helping arch rivals Ajax to an advantage in the title race.

Netherlands Eredivisie Preview: Week 31 (Apr 15-17)

Friday, Apr 15 2011
After FC Twente and PSV drew last week, Ajax are in title contention again. With only four matches to go the top three clubs in the Eredivisie are within a three point distance.
FC Twente are still league leaders in the Eredivisie, but after their 1-1 draw at home against Roda JC last week, the title holders are less secure of regaining the championship with four match round to go. On Thursday they lost 3-1 to Villarreal in the Europa League and the away match against De Graafschap will provide a good opportunity to regain self confidence.

PSV are second on the table, but theoretically in a sound position to win the title because League leaders FC Twente visit number three Ajax on the last matchday. The Eindhoven club, who visit Heracles Almelo this weekend, are two points behind. If PSV and Twente end up equal in points it’s the goal difference that counts and in that respect PSV are way better than both Twente and Ajax.

Ajax for their part will have to win four matches, wait and see PSV drop at least two points in the last four match rounds. The first of Ajax’ four finals is away at NEC.

Netherlands Eredivisie Preview: Week 30 (Apr 8-10)

Thursday, Apr 7 2011
PSV and FC Twente will try to recover from European debacles on Thursday. Last week Twente beat PSV to take over the top spot on the ranking.
FC Twente defeated PSV thanks to two Theo Janssen goals last week and the title holders therefore regained the top spot on the ranking. Janssen’s second goal against PSV was a sure candidate to be voted Goal of the Season. The midfielder chipped the ball over goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson after a run from inside his own half of the pitch.

Twente’s win handed them the best chances to win the title with only five matches to go. According to the statistically researched Euro Club Index the title holders have a 57 percent chance to regain the championship. PSV have only a 38,5 percent chance, while number three Ajax are left with a 5 percent chance.

Netherlands Eredivisie Preview: Week 29 (Apr 2-3)

Friday, Apr 1 2011
PSV and FC Twente play a possible title deciding match on Saturday, but in the Eredivisie all eyes were on Ajax this week. Johan Cruijff and the board of directors clashed upon reform plans at the club.
PSV and FC Twente play a possible title deciding match on Saturday, but in the Eredivisie all eyes were on Ajax this week. Johan Cruijff and the board of directors clashed upon reform plans at the club.

The ‘football war’ at Ajax was front page news for all Dutch papers this week. Cruijff, who resides in Barcelona, set up a reform plan for the Amsterdam club and the board of directors disagreed with the personal consequences, saying that Cruijff wanted to sack youth trainers, doctors and other staff members who were doing their job just fine. Amongst them, so they said, was Danny Blind, who is head coach Frank de Boers assistant.

The board of directors stepped down on Thursday. Chairman Uri Coronel said that he was unable to stop Cruijff, who is a semi-god in Amsterdam. Nobody knows what’s happening next at Ajax. Cruijff and his friends Dennis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk want to reform the club, but there are many battles to be won before they are in charge.

PSV and FC Twente don’t complain about their lack of publicity. While the Amsterdam Giant is struggling with its internal wars, the league leaders and the title holders prepare quietly for their clash in Enschede on Saturday.

Netherlands Eredivisie Preview: Week 28 (Mar 18-20)

Friday, Mar 18 2011
The Dutch title race is becoming tighter and tighter. With only seven match rounds to go league leaders have only a one point gap left over FC Twente. Number three Ajax is trailing three points.
This week a public poll in the biggest Dutch football magazine Voetbal International pointed to Ajax as title favorites, despite them being ranked third with a three point deficit towards league leaders PSV. With only seven match rounds to go, FC Twente are second on the table, trailing PSV one point.

Of the title contenders Ajax will face the toughest opponent this weekend, when the play fifth ranked ADO Den Haag. Frank de Boers outfit got hammered 3-0 at Spartak Moscow in the Europa League on Thursday and will have a tough job regrouping for the title race. A big blow for Ajax was the injury for Maarten Stekelenburg, who broke his thumb on a training this week. The goalkeeper will probably be out for the rest of the season.

FC Twente and PSV both qualified for the Europa League quarter finals on Thursday. The title holders will visit Excelsior on Sunday and the league leaders will play host to FC Utrecht.
