He is arguably world football’s most controversial player. He is 27-years-old and he is already his country’s all-time topscorer. He is simply Luis Alberto Suarez Diaz, born on January 24, 1987 in Salto, Uruguay. Four years after his infamous handball against Ghana in the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup, the Liverpool superstar is keen to leave his mark at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The entire Uruguayan squad endured a rough adventure during the South American World Cup qualifiers but in contrast, Luis Suarez had an excellent run individually as he finished as the topscorer ahead of Lionel Messi. However, his 11 goals were not enough to offer Uruguay an automatic spot in Brazil. La Celeste Olimpica had to go through a play-off tie against Jordan to determine their fate.

The 2013/14 season started turbulently for the Uruguayan but it ended up being his best one thus far in his career. He played at the 2013 Confederations Cup with a mind full of distractions; not only was he bothered by the 10-match ban he received for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013 but he was also distracted by the Real Madrid transfer saga.

The 2013/14 Barclays Player of the Season award
