Preview: Khedira’s return a boost as CR7 and co are out
Los Blancos will be without four key players. Cristiano Ronaldo tops the list of these unavailable stars. Like CR7, Pepe is injured and racing against time to be fit for the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League final against Atletico Madrid in two weeks’ time.
Dani Carvajal and Raphael Varane are also out and so is Argentina winger Angel Di Maria. The squad will welcome back Alvaro Arbeloa and German international Sami Khedira as coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed during Saturday’s press conference:
"They’re available and now I am going to decide if it's better to play them from the start or not. They’ll definitely play.
"I have to decide if I should put them on for the second half when the intensity of the match is lower. But they’re both good to go and will play."
In midweek, Real Madrid practically blew their chances of claiming this season’s league title. The maximum number of points that they can hit now is 90.
That said, they will need leaders Atleti to take nothing more than 1 point from their last two matches while Barcelona will also have to draw at least once. In short, by dropping points at home to Valencia and away to Real Valladolid during the past seven days, Los Blancos misused two golden opportunities to take their destiny into their hands.
