The title race will go down the wire this season and Liverpool will continue to fight for the league crown as they lock horns with Newcastle United at Anfield on Sunday, the 10th of May.

Preview: Liverpool hoping for a favor from West Ham

The Reds were on the verge of clinching their first league title in the Premier League era, but have seemingly gifted away the title to Man City in their last two matches. Brendan Rodgers’ men were outclassed by Chelsea as a tactical display from the Blues saw them scoring a 2-0 victory at the Anfield.

But the result which will hurt them more is their last outing at Selhurst Park which saw them drawing 3-3 against Crystal Palace.

Liverpool looked at ease for most of the match and were enjoying a 3-0 lead by the 55th minute. However their persistence to keep on attacking in order to better their goal difference came at a price as the Reds conceded thrice in 10 minutes courtesy of a goal from Damien Delaney and a wonderful brace from Dwight Gayle as the Eagles defied all odds to level the scores.

The result last Monday virtually handed the league crown to Man City who following their victory over Aston Villa now enjoy a two point lead over the Reds and just need a single point in their final outing against West Ham to clinch the title.

Liverpool will definitely be disappointed after a season which promised so much might end in a trophy less season. The Reds have been phenomenal all season long especially this year which saw them going on a 11 game win streak. Even though the Reds have been ruthless while going forward, defensive vulnerabilities might just cause them the title.

Liverpool have scored 99 times in the league this season this is just one less than City’s tally of 100 goals. However Man City enjoy a goal difference which is 13 better than that of their counterparts having conceded much less goals than the Reds have.

Where the Citizens have conceded just 37 goals in as many games they have played in the league this season, Liverpool have shipped 49. Whereas their defensive record at home is the fifth best in the league, Liverpool have conceded 32 goals on their travels. This is definitely a concern for Brendan Rodgers since only two teams outside the relegation zone have a worse record including Stoke and Sunderland and this is one area the former Swansea boss will be looking to address next season.

"We know the areas we need to improve. We've got 99 goals. It's fairly clear and simple for me -- we need to improve defensively away from home,” he said.

"In terms of conceding goals at home, we're ranked in the best five. We've conceded 17 goals at home. But away from home, we've conceded 32.

"And it's not even so much about structure. It's about concentration for me.

"We've conceded those 32 goals away from home, yet we went to Old Trafford and didn't concede, we went to Tottenham and didn't concede, we went to Southampton and didn't concede.

"But the other night, when we were 3-0 up, we conceded three goals. We conceded three goals at Cardiff, although we won.

"There are games I've looked at away from home where, even though we've won, we haven't defended well enough.”

Newcastle on the other hand have been quite miserable in recent weeks and will be eager to see the end of the current season. The Magpies seemed likely to clinch a European place after producing solid performances before the turn of the year. The month of November and December saw the Geordies win seven of their nine matches. However the departure of inspirational midfielder Yohan Cabaye has seemed to have adverse effects on the team with Newcastle experiencing a downward spiral as far as performances are concerned following the departure of the Frenchman midfielder to Paris Saint Germain in the winter transfer window.

Their 3-0 win over relegated side Cardiff City last time out was their first after six successive losses and Newcastle will be hoping to end their season in style by giving Liverpool a run for their money in the last game of the campaign.

Newcastle will be without a number of players including defender Ryan Taylor as well as striker Papiss Cisse who will remain on the sidelines for the final match of the season.

Former Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson is expected to make a return to the starting eleven after serving a three match ban for his red card against Manchester City at Anfield last month. Daniel Sturridge has also regained fitness and will be in contention for a place in the starting eleven.
