The Atletico Madrid star grabbed a last-gasp winner to steal the win for Spain in their final group game of the campaign.

Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portuguese teammates were left stunned on Tuesday night after a defeat to Spain denied them the chance to qualify for next year's UEFA Nations League finals. The Seleccao were given a bitter pill to swallow with Alvaro Morata's late strike securing the crucial three points for the visitors inside the Braga Municipal Stadium.

Qualification to the next round was Portugal's to lose after assuming the No.1 spot in Group A2 following Spain's capitulation against Switzerland last week. Having come into the game on the back of the 2-1 defeat to the Swiss, La Roja knew that only a win will secured their place in the final four of the Nations League and they were able to successfully leave their mark when least expected.

Luis Enrique's side had the majority of the ball but struggled to actually produce chances to threatened the Portuguese goal. In the first half, the hosts had the best opportunities with Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota and Bruno Fernandes all coming close to finding the back of the net. The second half followed the same blueprint and it was not until the dying embers of the game that the real drama unfolded.

Alvaro Morata emerged as the match hero for Spain, popping up in the right lace at the right time to tap home the ball from close range after substitute Nico Williams had headed it into his path. With the strike, La Roja usurped their Iberian rivals to book a place in the finals alongside Croatia, the Netherlands and Italy. The semi-finals of the competition is expected to take place in June 2023.
