France manager Didier Deschamps has issued a plea to PSG regarding star player Kylian Mbappe, with the national team boss requesting the Ligue 1 giants give the talisman forward some rest between now and the FIFA World Cup.
These comments came in the aftermath of Sunday's round of UEFA Nations League fixtures, with the reigning champions of the world taking on Denmark in their sixth and final match of the group stages.
Shockingly, the European giants, who are also the defending UEFA Nations League champions, lost that tie 2-0 to the Scandinavian outfit. And to make things worse, as a result of that defeat, Mbappe and Co. missed out on the finals and avoided relegation to League B by only two points after finishing in third.
Kylian, who led the line in that loss alongside Olivier Giroud due to Karim Benzema's injury, wasn't able to muster an inspiring display. While Deschamps did not blame PSG and the number of games he has played for the attacker's poor display against Denmark, the Bleus tactician clearly has Qatar 2022 in mind when making this statement.
"I know he (Galtier) still wants to play Kylian," Deschamps said, as per the Daily Mail.
"But from time to time, to be able to breathe a little bit, to have a few good minutes less, it won't fail him, quite the contrary."
Mbappe has played in every single PSG game this season bar two, and one quick look at his stats shows why, with the Frenchman netting an impressive 10 goals in nine starts. However, things are set to get extremely hectic between now and the November 20 kick-off date.
Les Parisiens will play 11 games in six weeks, with four of those matches being UEFA Champions League showdowns. Of that four, two are tricky away tests against Juventus and Benfica while Galtier's men will face French giants Marseille in mid-October.
It will be interesting to see what Galtier says in response. Until then, Deschamps must focus on the scrutiny he is currently under, having guided the continental powerhouse to only one win in their six UEFA Nations League matches.
