La Roja lost grip of their lead in the group after falling to an unexpected defeat at home on Saturday night.

Spain suffered their first home loss in over four years as Switzerland put their quest for a potential Nations League final appearance in doubt with a shock win in Seville. La Roja were made to cede the No.1 spot in League A Group 2 following Saturday night's 2-1 defeat, giving Portugal a golden opportunity to demote them to second place ahead of winner-takes-all final group clash on Tuesday.

The host's sour night began when Manuel Akanji put the visitors ahead with a headed goal in the 21st-minute. However, the second half began on a promising note with Jordi Alba firing home the equalizer with an assist from Marco Asensio. But it did not last for long as moments later another Breel Embolo will bundle home the eventual winner from close range after La Roja failed to properly deal with a Switzerland corner.

The game's outcome resulted in Portugal moving two points clear of Spain at the top of the group, having enjoyed a relatively different night in Prague. Fernando Santos' side were able to stamp their dominance by running away with a 4-0 win against Czech Republic, thanks Diogo Dalot's brace and a goal apiece from Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes.

In retrospect, Spain's defeat against Switzerland was their only loss in their past 56 competitive home matches, and their second loss on home soil since 2003. They will head into their final game two points behind Portugal and needing all three points to top the group and progress.
