Atletico Madrid will begin a new Champions League campaign by welcoming FC Porto to Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday night.

Atletico Madrid will welcome FC Porto to Wanda Metropolitano for their first Group B encounter of the 2022-2023 UEFA Champions League season. Los Rojiblancos will hope to get the campaign off to the best possible start after rather tops-turvy ride on the domestic front.

Diego Simeone's men will approach the midweek's affair sitting in seventh in the La Liga chart, having picked up only seven points from the four matches they have played thus far. They come into the clash with Porto on the back of a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad, extending their unbeaten run this season to two after falling to a 2-0 defeat against Villarreal in their second game of the season.

Last season, Atletico made it to the semifinals of the 2015-16 Champions League before reaching the final the following year, but the Red and Whites have struggled to make a significant impact in the league since. Last season, they won against Manchester United in the Round of 16 but could not progress farther than the quarter-finals following their defeat to Manchester City.

Putting Wednesday's game into perspective, Simeone's side will eye an improved performance to the one that resulted in a 0-0 draw when they met Porto in the group stage last season. In the reverse fixture in Portugal, the La Liga club was able to secure a 3-1 win and will look to draw inspiration from it for this one.

For Porto, the mission will be to carry on with their strong start to the season when they make the trip to Spain for the midweek's encounter. The Dragons finished last season as the winners of the Primeira Liga and have started on a very positive note to retain their crown.

Over the weekend, the Dragons were 2-0 winners over Gil Vicente in the league, having previously suffered a shock 3-1 defeat against Rio Ave in their third game of the season. Featuring in a group that has Club Brugge and Bayer Leverkusen competing as well, Porto could make a huge statement of intent by getting a favorable result at Atletico. However, that will take some doing as they have not been able to defeat the Spaniards in any of their last four meetings.
