Most-watched football games in the U.S.: August 15-21, 2022

The past week was full of interesting matches to watch for fans in the United States, with the English Premier League being the undisputed ratings champion one more time.

Six matches for the English top-flight were among the most viewed in the country, with the clash between Bournemouth and Arsenal earning the honor of the most-watched of the week. Considering the English and Spanish feeds for this weekend, the match was seen by nearly 850,000 fans across the country.

The second spot in this ranking goes to Newcastle and Manchester City, who played out to a 3-3 draw on Sunday. The Magpies are looking like the real deal this time around, and their unbeaten run after three games confirms that notion. As for Pep Guardiola's team, they have secured one of the best offensive starts of the season with nine goals to their name, and that has seen them racking up good audience numbers every week.

The podium was completed by Chelsea and Leeds United, with the team led by Jesse Marsch destroying the Blues with a 3-0 score. It has not been a proper start for Thomas Tuchel's team, but fans are surely loving to watch them every week on U.S. TV, as they have made the top three for the second consecutive week.

Let us have a look at the numbers last week brought us in terms of football games:

Most Watched Games, USA, August 15, 21, Arsenal, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Manchester City, Chelsea, Leeds, English Premier League

What are this week's must-watch games?

Man City vs Crystal Palace live this Saturday at 10 a.m. ET on Peacock, SiriusXM FC, Telemundo, Telemundo Deportes En Vivo, and fuboTV

The Premier League once again dominates our list of top matches to watch this week, with Manchester City vs Crystal Palace being the standout fixture from the English top-flight. The defending champions enter this clash on the back of their thrilling 3-3 draw at Newcastle, coming back from 3-1 down to pick up a point at St. James' Park. The Eagles, on the other hand, enter this clash on the back of a three-game unbeaten run, beating Oxford United 2-0 – in the Carabao Cup – and Aston Villa 3-1 in their last two outings.

However, this isn't the only interesting fixture. Arsenal, who are top of the league and the only team with a 100 percent record, host Fulham, with the newly-promoted side showing against Liverpool and Brentford that they will be a tough side this term. Chelsea, having lost 3-0 to Leeds last weekend, take on Leicester while Liverpool go in search of their first win of the season when they host Bournemouth.

Juventus vs Roma live this Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET exclusively on Paramount+

Saturday will see two potential title candidates face off in Serie A as Juventus prepare to host none other than Roma. The Bianconeri currently trail their opponents by two points after only two rounds and this is due to their disappointing draw away to Sampdoria in the most recent round. Mourinho's men, on the other hand, are one of only three teams with a perfect record so far, alongside Napoli and Inter, winning their opening two fixtures. Who will come away with the three points this weekend? Make sure to catch the action live on Paramount+.

Juventus, Roma, Serie A, Broadcast Listings

PSG vs Monaco live this Sunday at 2:45 p.m. ET on beIN SPORTS, beIN SPORTS CONNECT, beIN SPORTS en Español, Fanatiz USA, and fuboTV

And our final game to make the list is a highly-anticipated Ligue 1 showdown between PSG and Monaco, two of France's biggest clubs. Mbappe and Co. are the hosts for this tie, with the home side looking to continue their emphatic start to the campaign. Galtier's men boast a perfect record, scoring a whopping 17 goals in their first three fixtures, with Neymar playing a key role in this form, while conceding only three. The visitors, on the other hand, have triumphed only once so far (D1, L1). Will Les Parisiens steamroll another French heavyweight this Sunday? Tune in to find out.

This week in women's football, August 26, September 1, NWSL, 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, Liga MX Femenil

Once again, club football will dominate the women's football scene this weekend, but the only national team competition left to be played in coming days is expected to be thrilling for those who watch that match.

Added to the usual coverage for North American leagues such as the NWSL or the Liga MX Femenil, the start of a new season in Europe is upon us, and the Coupe de France Feminine will be one tournament to keep an eye on. As days go by, there will be more matches coming for European countries, which will only widen the offer for women's football fans across the world.

Without further ado, let's have a look at what the beautiful game will offer in terms of women's football matches for the next seven days.

2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup

The title clash is upon us in what has been one of the most entertaining age-limited competitions sanctioned by FIFA. The competition will come to an end this Sunday and fans are expected to follow both matches of a double-header to be remembered. Netherlands will take on Brazil first in the third-place match before the ultimate showdown between Spain and Japan, with the winner set to come away with the prestigious title.

2022 NWSL season

The North American competition returns in full motion with all the teams playing this weekend. Three teams are level with 28 points at this point of the season, with the Portland Thorns having an edge over their rivals thanks to their goal difference.

The big game of the weekend will feature two of those leading teams, as the Thorns get ready to welcome the San Diego Wave on a late kick-off clash this Saturday. To make matters more interesting, the Houston Dash will be playing against the Washington Spirit before that tie, which will help to up the ante between the other title contenders.

Liga MX Femenil - Apertura 2022 tournament

The Mexican top-flight has given fans some of the best moments in the ongoing campaign, and this time around, the big story has to include Chivas, who are still unbeaten and with a perfect record after nine matchdays. Tigres, Monterrey, and Pumas are still in contention for the top spot, but judging by the kind of football Chivas have played, it seems that any team that dares to challenge the team from Guadalajara will leave the pitch empty-handed.

Coupe de France Feminine

The match that kicks things off in French football comes with an interesting matchup this time around, as current title holders PSG lock horns with the most winning side in tournament history: Olympique Lyon. Four of Lyon's wins in this competition have come by beating Les Parisiens, which means that the team from the French capital has some unfinished business against Les Lyonnaises.

UEFA Champions League draw: Bayern and Barca share group, PSG set to face Juventus

The wait is over, and the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League groups have been decided.

As usual, there have been winners and losers from this draw, and all eyes will be on Group C, where Bayern, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen will be fighting for the two spots to play in the knockout stage. This will be, without a doubt, the competition's "Group of Death".

As for the defending champions, Real Madrid were drawn to Group F, where they should not have any problems to make it to the next round. The Spanish side have been drawn against RB Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Celtic, in what seems to be a comfortable group for Ancelotti's crew.

Elsewhere, Manchester City have also been drawn in an interesting group. Guardiola's men will begin their run in the tournament against Sevilla, Borussia Dortmund, and Kobenhavn in Group G.

Have a look at the groups here.

Women's EURO winner set to secure multi-million dollar sponsorship deal

What a big difference one single moment can make in a player's career. In the case of Chloe Kelly, her name will be forever in the history books after coming off the bench to score a crucial winner for England during this summer's Women's EURO final. That result saw Sarina Wiegman's side win their first ever major title, and end the 50-plus years England has waited for "it to come home".

As a result of that dramatic moment, the 24-year-old attacker, who plays her club football for Manchester City, has become a heroine and a household name overnight. Hence, it is no surprise that many companies, eager to get involved in the potentially lucrative money-making opportunities women's football is projected to offer in the not too distant future, have reached out with offers for her to act as a brand ambassador.

One of these companies is none other than Land Rover, which, according to reports, has offered her a deal worth approximately $2.4 million (£2 million).

And she is not the only Lioness player to receive a lucrative offer, with the same report indicating that skipper Leah Williamson has inked a deal with Italian luxury powerhouse Gucci in addition to her already existing deals with Nike and Pepsi, while defender Lucy Bronze is a spokeswoman for EE, Visa, and Nike.

Certainly, as the women's game slowly becomes more and more mainstream, it is highly likely that more players will be receiving the same kind of lucrative sponsorship deals their male counterparts have been getting for years.

"No more Maguire!" Manchester Utd fans hail Varane-Martinez partnership after superb performance in Liverpool win

Manchester United fans have called on manager Erik ten Hag to maintain the Raphael Varane-Lisandro Martinez center-back partnership for the foreseeable future following Monday's night's win over Liverpool. The pair delivered a colossal performance to inspire the Red Devils to a 2-1 win over their arch nemesis, as they secured their first win of the 2022-2023 Premier League campaign.

Ahead of the final game of Matchday 3, multiple reports from the UK media indicated that United were set to drop Harry Maguire for the meeting with Liverpool. The 29-year-old English defender had proved to be a liability at the back for the Red Devils in the defeats to Brighton and Brentford and, as a result, Ten Hag was exploring other solutions.

Having been paired together in the training sessions leading to the clash with Liverpool, both Varane and Martinez won over the hearts of the United fans with respective top performances. The former exhibited leadership in a rather young backline which featured Tyrell Malacia and Diogo Dalot in the full-back positions while Martinez gave everything to curb the attacking prowess of the Merseyside giants.

Skipper Harry Maguire was an unused substitute and his regular spot in the starting lineup is now said to be under threat. Ahead of Monday's game, Erik ten Hag suggested that the former Leicester City defender's communication and mobility has been suspect so far and that he expects things to improve with the introduction of Varane into the side.

'Varane is a very experienced player, won everything and will bring the communication in the back four,' he said. 'We want mobility and agility in the back four.'

Over the weekend, Maguire was linked with a shock move to Chelsea but nothing concrete as emerged amid the Blues' supposed interest.

Mourinho posts heartfelt tribute to Wijnaldum as Dutchman suffers leg break two weeks after joining Roma

Georginio Wijnaldum has suffered one of the worst possible starts to life at Roma. Just two weeks after joining the Italian giants from PSG, moving to the Italian capital on loan after his horrendous 2021/22 season in Paris, the Dutchman suffered a gutting injury.

The 31-year-old endured a horrible leg break on Sunday during the club's preparations for Monday's showdown with Cremonese. The Serie A outfit later confirmed the former Liverpool ace had fractured his tibia, which not only sidelines him for a significant part of the Giallorossi's season, but also casts his availability for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar under tremendous doubt.

This unfortunate development prompted a heartfelt message from Jose Mourinho, who took to Instagram to pay tribute to his new midfielder. Additionally, the Special One was also enraged by those alleging Felix Afena-Gyan was behind Wijnaldum's horrific injury and defended the 19-year-old Ghanaian attacker.

"Sometimes football can be s**t. In only 2 weeks, Gini became one of us because of his human qualities (his football qualities we already knew)," the Special One wrote in his caption alongside a picture of him holding up a Roma jersey with the words "Forza Gini".

"Sadly, in a very unfortunate accident he had a bad injury that will keep him away from playing for a long time.

"But it's not just football to be s**t sometimes, people can also be...

"Those who initiated the rumors that a top kid like Felix could be responsible for what happened are real scum.

"Let's all be together tonight: we play for Roma, for Wijnaldum, and for Felix Afena-Gyan."

Wijnaldum will undergo further assessment in order to determine the length of his absence, but the Dutchman is expected to be out for several months nonetheless. Qatar 2022 kicks off on November 20, which is roughly three months away, meaning the midfielder faces a race against the clock to recover.

Transfer: Guardiola hints at Bernardo Silva to Barca as PSG plot hijack

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has indicated that Bernardo Silva could leave the club to join Barcelona before this summer's transfer window closes. The Spanish coach has admitted that the Portuguese playmaker "really likes" Barcelona amid latest interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Bernardo Silva still remains a key member at Man City but despite his importance to the Premier League champions, his future currently remains uncertain. The Portuguese star has been linked with a move to Camp Nou all summer, and while no concrete move has been made by the Blaugrana, all the parties involved are aware of the interest.

With the uncertainty regarding Bernardo Silva's future still boiling over, French publication L'Equipe has revealed that Paris Saint-Germain are ready to make a swoop for the former AS Monaco star. According to the report, an offer of $70M will be tabled by the French champions to test the resolve of Manchester City in the coming hours.

Two England players announce retirement after successful Women's EURO tournament

Both Ellen White and Jill Scott have announced their retirements in recent days, and certainly, the duo, who have earned nearly 300 caps between them, could not have picked a better time to hang up their boots.

White is England women's all-time top goal-scorer, with 52 goals from 113 caps, and is second in terms of most goals of any England player, with only Wayne Rooney's 53 strikes bettering her tally. The 33-year-old, who most recently played her club football for Manchester City, made her debut for the national side 12 years ago in March 2010, and marked her senior debut by scoring the third of her team's goals as England cruised to a 3-0 win over Austria.

Meanwhile, Scott, who last played for Aston Villa, has also been a steady presence in the England women's team for over a decade. The 35-year-old midfielder first made her debut in May 2006, and went on to earn over 160 caps for the side.

Neither player have confirmed what their next steps will be post retirement, but it is safe to say that it is a well-earned rest for a duo who have seen both the highs and lows over the course of a decade-plus era of featuring for the Lionesses in various competitions.

Transfer: Newcastle agree $69M deal for talented La Liga attacker

Newcastle's hopes for the 2022/23 season have just gone up a notch as the Premier League outfit have all but agreed a deal for a highly-rated La Liga attacker. That man is none other than Alexander Isak, the Real Sociedad forward who had been on the radar of the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona not too long ago. According to the Athletic, the Premier League outfit have struck a deal with La Real for the Swedish ace and it looks to be only a matter of time before the 22-year-old arrives at St. James' Park.

The former Dortmund ace will reportedly cost Eddie Howe's side a hefty $69M, though others suggest it will be a bit higher at $70M. Newcastle will be happy to have landed the attacker as signing competition for Callum Wilson, who has faced his fair share of injuries throughout his career, was paramount.

In 132 appearances for Real Sociedad, Isak has scored 44 times and while he did not enjoy the best of campaigns last season, scoring only six goals in 32 La Liga games, he remains a talented player with room to grow. A move for Watford's Joao Pedro had been on the table, but after the aforementioned injury to Wilson, Newcastle returned for Alexander.
