Porto and Sporting CP will lock horns on Saturday, August 20th in a game that many Portuguese football fans will be looking forward to.

For Portuguese football fans, any match featuring two of the country's three biggest sides is always one they look forward to. This season, supporters of the Primeira Liga will not have to wait long for the first big clash of the season, as Porto and Sporting CP are set to lock horns on Saturday evening. Porto come into this season as the reigning champions as the Dragons held off challenges from Benfica and upcoming opponents Sporting CP to win their 30th title by a comfortable six point margin.

Notably, they had a nearly flawless season, losing just one of their games and overall are unbeaten in 35 of their last 36 Primeira Liga matches. That strong run has extended to this season, where Sérgio Conceição's men have won their first two games, first cruising to a 5-1 rout over Maritimo before battling to secure a gritty 1-0 road win against Vizela.

Meanwhile, Sporting CP, who finished as runners up, have been involved in some interesting, high-scoring matches. Rúben Amorim's squad first kicked off the season by entertaining fans during a three-all draw against Sporting Braga, where the lead's going back and forth was quite reminiscent of a tennis match. They then picked up their first win of the nascent campaign by again scoring three goals, but this time, sans reply, against Rio Ave to bring them into this match sitting on four points.

That means that Sporting CP could theoretically jump to top of the table if they can beat their bitter rivals, but they have had a frustrating hoodoo as of late when it comes to playing Porto at home. Indeed, the Lions have failed to win in their last nine trips to Porto's home ground, with their last success here coming back in April 2016.
