Man United have a herculean of a task at hand as they hope to turn a two goal deficit in their favour when they face Greek side Olympiakos at Old Trafford.

Preview: Moyes and United desperate for qualification to the last eight

Moyes’s maiden season in charge of the Red Devils has been one of United’s worst in recent years. When he took over the reins from departing manager Sir Alex Ferguson it was unfathomable that the defending champions will be struggling for a place in the top four. However with the season almost about to end top four seems like a distant dream and the only way United can participate in next year’s Champions League is if they win the competition this time around something which seems increasingly unlikely.

Olympiakos are expected to be in a buoyant mood after they clinched a fourth straight league title and will now be looking to seal their place in the last eight of the competition. The Greek club hold a two goal advantage and another goal at Old Trafford could verily put the tie to rest.

In contrast to Olympiakos, the mood in the United camp will be dreary after the Red Devils suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of Liverpool at their own backyard. The match was highlighted by three penalties which were awarded to the Merseyside outfit, out of which captain Steven Gerrard was able to convert two. Premier League’s top scorer Luis Suarez added another goal late in the game to round off another disappointing outing for the defending English champions.

The pressure seems to be mounting on David Moyes whose job security has reportedly come under threat following a below par season so far. However the former Everton manager has insisted that he is here to stay for the long run

"My future has not changed one bit," said Moyes.

"I’ve got a great job. I know exactly the direction I want to go in. It’s not been the season we’d hoped we would have at this present time.”

"But I’ve got ideas what I want to do and put in place when the time’s right.

"The most important thing is to get the Olympiakos game played. Hopefully get through that competition. If we can it’ll be a massive lift for us.”

The Scottish international has also encouraged his players to put an improved performance something he believes they are capable of.

"I see the players every day. The qualities they show me - I think they know they can play better. I don’t think any of them are questioning that," Moyes told reporters.

"I’ve got belief in the players. I can see what they can do.”

"I agree we’ve not showed it as often as we’d like, we’ll try and make that happen tomorrow night."

What bodes well for Man United is the fact that the Greek champions have lost on all of their previous 11 visits to England. Their record against Man United has been less than impressive and prior to their victory in the first leg Olympiakos had failed to beat the Red Devils in four Champions League meetings conceding 12 goals in the process.

However the current Olympiakos side is buzzing with confidence especially after winning the league title on Saturday. Furthermore the Kokkinoi have only lost twice in the European competition this season, with both of their defeats coming at the hands of French side PSG.

The Greek side will be without Michael Olaitan who has not played for Olympiakos since the beginning of March. Ivan Marcano (groin) and Javier Saviola (quadriceps) are also doubts and unlikely to feature for the visitors. Man United’s only injury concern is defender Jonny Evans who has been suffering with a calf injury.
