The eight-time European champions secured their ticket to Wembley and booked a meeting with England.

The Germany Women's National Team has reached yet another European Championship final after defeating France in Wednesday night's penultimate encounter. The eight-time continental champions were inspired to the historic berth in Milton Keynes via Alexandra Popp's brace as they secured a 2-1 win over Les Bleus.

Martin Voss-Tecklenburg's side went into the semi-final encounter on the back of a four-game unbeaten run, scoring 11 goals and having conceded none. Despite their starling record, they were not expected to have a field day against a French side that was unbeaten in their last 18 outings leading up to the clash. Still, the former managed to draw first blood through the talismanic Alex Popp in the 40th minute before Merle Frohms' own-goal restored parity ahead of the break.

France were pretty much the more progressive side in the second half but failed to convert the momentum into a goal. Ultimately, they were made to pay for their inefficiency with Germany's skipper popping up to score the game winner to become the first player to score in five consecutive games in the history of the competition.

In retrospect, there have been 13 iterations of the UEFA Women's EURO tournament and the result on Wednesday night meant that Germany have now been to the final in nine of them. They will go up against old rivals England inside Wembley and are the much fancied side to lift the trophy as they have beaten the Lionesses' 21 times in 27 meetings. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the pair met earlier this year and Sarah Wiegmann's side defeated the eight-time European champions to lift the Arnold Clark Cup.
