Man Utd in late attempt to hijack the Nunez deal

Man United launch last-ditch attempt to beat Liverpool to the signing of Darwin Nunez

June 9, 2022 By Ali M.
The Red Devils are set to meet with the player's agent today as the look to hijack Liverpool's Nunez deal.

Benfica star Darwin Nunez is the latest name to dominate the transfer headlines. After weeks of rumors linking him with the likes of Manchester United and Newcastle, the Uruguayan striker appears to be on the cusp of joining Premier League rivals Liverpool.

The Merseyside giants stepped up their interest in the 22-year-old after Sadio Mane's imminent Anfield exit became apparent, with the South American seen as the perfect replacement for the Senegalese sensation. Additionally, the Eagles' asking price was initially thought to be too steep for Klopp's side but the English club are now ready to break their transfer record for the young attacker.

And according to the Athletic, last season's UEFA Champions League runners-up have already agreed personal terms with Nunez and will simply need to reach a deal with his Portuguese employers, with discussions regarding the structure of the €100M deal said to be ongoing.

But have the Red Devils given up hope on the highly-rated no.9? According to a number of reporters, the answer is no.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Portuguese football expert Pedro Sepúlveda of SIC Notícias stated that Manchester United have scheduled a last-ditch meeting with Jorge Mendes, the player's new agent, in a desperate attempt to stop Nunez's Anfield move from going through.

While Liverpool have made an official bid for the goalscorer, the 20-time English champions haven't. Nonetheless, the Old Trafford higher-ups wish to sit with Mendes to see whether a deal can be salvaged or not.

This story was corroborated by the well-known Fabrizio Romano, with the Italian transfer guru stating that today will be a crucial day in the Darwin Nunez transfer saga.

Unfortunately for Manchester United, the odds of them stealing the Uruguayan from under Liverpool's nose remain low. As pointed out by Sepúlveda, the Benfica ace, having scored six goals in the UEFA Champions League last season, has his eyes set on a move to Merseyside as they are the only interested Premier League side that can offer him Europe's premier club competition.
