Lazio host Roma in the second Derby della Capitale of the season as the two sides battle it out at the Stadio Olimpico in a Serie A encounter.

Preview: Lazio confident of putting an end to Roma’s win streak

Rudi Garcia’s men have enjoyed an incredible start to the season and currently occupy the second position in the Serie A trailing leaders Juventus by nine points with a game in hand.

The Lupi are on an incredible run having won all of their last five matches and will be looking to record their sixth consecutive win as they hope to keep their Scudetto  hopes alive.

Lazio on the other hand have performed admirably after the return of Edy Reja. The Italian took charge of a Lazio side which was in shambles and flirting with the relegation zone. Within two months he has turned things around for the Biancocelesti  who are currently ninth  and trail their City rivals by 19 points.

After Vladimir Petkovic's dismissal, Lazio have enjoyed a five match unbeaten run which also saw them holding league leaders Juventus to  draw after the Old Lady had recorded 12 straight wins in the Serie A. After failing to win at home all season under Petkovic, Reja’s arrival has seen the Eagles score two victories on the road last month at the expense of Udinese and Chievo Verona.

An illustrious month has left Reja in a buoyant mood ahead of the match who has spoken of the confidence he has in his players and their ability to produce a match winning performance against a high flying Roma side.

We arrive to the derby with confidence,'' Reja said. “We played well against Juventus but even better at Chievo.”

“It was my team's best performance since I joined Lazio.”

“Roma have shown great things this season but we are improving and growing game after game.”

“We are not ruling our chances.”

The 68 year old also recognised the importance of the match from a fan’s point of view and hopes to have the happier set of fans when the match ends at the Stadio Olimpico.

“We know the significance of this game and how much it means to our fans.”

“My team will try to hand a good performance and take three points.''

Lazio will be hoping for Antonio Candreva in particular to turn things around for his side. The 26 year old has been in prolific form this season having scored in all of the last three league games. The winger is his team’s top scorer this season and will be confident of extending his tally tonight.
Despite losing out one of their star players in the shape of Hernanes who sealed a move to Inter Milan last month, Lazio have a capable player of filling in his boots. Keita Balde is one of Lazio’s rising stars and showcased his immense talent with a wonderful performance against Chievo last weekend. Another good performance at the Eternal City will definitely take the Spaniard’s confidence sky high.

Club captain Stefano Mauri will be available for selection after his ban for not reporting an alleged match fixing back in 2011 was reduced, but it remains to be seen whether the midfielder will be able to make it to Reja’s starting eleven. With Federico Marchetti  still struggling for fitness Etrit Berisha will take the position between the posts once again.

Miroslav Klose is expected to return after missing training on Friday because of flu. But new signing Helder Postiga and full back Abdoulay Konko will remain on the sidelines as they nurse their calf injuries. Lazio’s injury woes do not end here with Michael Ciani expected to miss the match due to a thigh problem whereas Ederson has been ruled out for the season after suffering an injury in the match against Udinese whereas Lucas Biglia will serve suspension after picking up his fourth booking in the match against Chievo.

Bosnia and Herzegovina international Miralem Pjanic is poised to return to the starting eleven for Roma after being rested in the Coppa Italia match against Napoli. Federico Balzaretti  and Dodo are both expected to miss out which will see Vassilis Torosidis deputising at left back again.

Roma produced a powerful performance last time the two sides met back in September, La Maggica  raced to an easy 2-0 win with their counterparts failing to register a single shot on target in what was a night to forget for the Biancazzurri .
