The former European champions will welcome Switzerland to their backyard for their very first game of this year's Nations League campaign.

Portugal and Switzerland will both aim to secure their first wins of the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League at the second attempt when they meet at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon on Sunday. Fernando Santos's side left it late to salvage a 1-1 draw against Spain on matchday one, an encounter which saw Cristiano Ronaldo starting on the bench.

While it might have been down to a tactical call on the part of headcoach Fernando Santos, the former European champions are expected reintroduce the Manchester United superstar into their starting lineup ahead of what appears to be another tricky game. At the moment, they remain in second place after just one game but will feel buoyed by the fact that they have lost just once in their last 10 matches across all competitions.

Switzerland are no strangers to Portugal, as both sides met in the semifinals of the latter's campaign to being crowned as the winners of the inaugural edition of the Nations League. The Seleccao won 3-1 in that encounter, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring all three goals to nullify Ricardo Rodriguez's strike. With that at the back of the minds of the hosts, an intriguing clash could be anticipated although the Swiss may look to make life uncomfortable for them.

Murat Yakin's side have been far from the team that became a favorite for neutrals prior to their quarter-final elimination at Euro 2020. So far they have failed to win any of their last three matches in all competitions, having gone unbeaten in the seven games that preceded this period.

They come into the match-up with Portugal on the back of a 2-1 defeat on the opening-day against Czech Republic. The desire to return to winning ways is, as a result, very high as they pursue their first away win over the Seleccao since 1969.

I know Cristiano Ronaldo didn't start last Thursday but we are looking forward to being able to play against such teams. Portugal are the favourite, that's clear.
