Walter Mazzari’s side play the Italian champions at the Juventus Stadium in the first Derby d’Italia of the year this Sunday.

Preview: Mazzarri keen to have a say in the Scudetto race

Internazionale’s chances of once again being champions of Italy might be the same as Stevenage’s chances of qualifying for Europe for next season but that does not mean that the Nerazzuri will not be having some say as to who wins this year’s Scudetto.

Although they have improved quite a lot under Walter Mazzarri, Inter are still far from a side in a position to fight for a top three place let alone mount a serious title assault.

With 33 points from 21 games, the Lombardy club is already eleven points off the final Champions League berth currently occupied by Napoli who are followed closely by Fiorentina. The game against the reigning Italian champions might have come at a wrong time for the away side that has not been on song as of late. The team is yet to register a victory this year. After crashing out of the Coppa Italia at the hands of Udinese, Mazzarri’s men have lost league games against Lazio and Genoa while only earning draws in home games against Catania and Chievo.

Such a poor run of result hardly inspires confidence especially with a clash against an in-form team on the horizon. However, stranger things have happened in football so the game against Antonio Conte’s men might be exactly what the fifth placed team needs. Moreover, last year’s 1-1 draw at home should act as an indicator of the fact that Inter may still have some life left in them when it comes to playing against the big boys.

Despite going through somewhat of a mini goal drought, Rodrigo Palacio is the man who is just great at making the difference in big games. In the reverse fixture, the Argentine worked his socks off. Mobile and intelligent, he is not an easy player to control. Diego Milito and Hugo Campagnaro are also two very important players but it will be Palacio who will have a lot of work to do if his side aspires to get anything out of this game.

Linked with a return to Manchester United and offered riches by Paris Saint-Germain, it is quite safe to say that Pogba’s star is rising fast. Under the tutelage of Antonio Conte, the Frenchman has become one of finest young midfielders in the game. A lot will fall on Carlos Tevez as well but it will be Pogba’s performances that will make a whole lot of difference for his team looking to get away as far as possible from the chasing pack.

Antonio Conte will be without his star goalkeeper Gigi Buffon who is suspended due to his dismissal against Lazio. Pablo Osvaldo has signed for the Italian champions but might not be included in the squad for this game.

For Inter, Hernanes, who just signed from Lazio is expected to play some part in the encounter but Esteban Cambiasso is likely to miss the encounter due to a hamstring injury.
