Juventus will be hoping to maintain the distance between themselves and Roma, when they face Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

Preview: Champions looking to respond after midweek defeat

The Old Lady suffered a 1-0 loss at the same stadium when Roma played host to Juventus in a Coppa Italia tie. A solitary goal from former Arsenal forward Gervinho subjected the bianconeri  to only their second domestic defeat of the season.

Last time Antonio Conte’s men lost to an Italian side, they embarked on a 12 match unbeaten run and Juve will now return to “the Eternal City” hoping to bounce back from the defeat and in the process record their 13th straight win in the Serie A.

With the Turin side already knocked out of the Champions League and the Coppa Italia, Conte’s men will be cautious of not letting their eight point lead over second placed Roma slip and will be hoping to notch all three points as they chase their third successive league title.

Juve have lost just five points in the league this season courtesy of a draw against Inter Milan and a defeat at the hands of Fiorentina and will be confident of recording a win on Saturday given their impressive record against Lazio.

The Biancocelesti  have not beaten Juve in the league since December 2003 which has extended Juventus’ unbeaten streak against their counterparts to 18 matches. Furthermore the bianconeri  have emerged victorious at the Olimpico against Lazio without conceding a single goal in their last four league outings.

Lazio on the other hand have benefited from the second coming from coach Edy Reja, who took the Lazio hot seat after Vladimir Petkovic was relieved of his duties earlier in the month. His return has seen the Biancazzurri record three wins and a draw and under him Lazio appear to be a much more threatening side than before. Furthermore with six wins out of nine at Stadio Olimpico, Lazio’s home record has seemingly improved and Reja’s men might finally end their 11 year long voodoo against the league leaders.

A win on Saturday could take the Biancocelesti  two places up in the league table depending on how 7th placed Torino and 8th placed Parma fare in their league outings. Lazio have already lost twice to the defending champions this season. A 4-0 thrashing in the Italian Super Cup in August last year was followed by a 4-1 defeat at the Juventus Stadium.

Lazio will be without a number of players for the home match against Juventus however Senad Lulic and Ogenyi Onazi  will both return from suspension, whereas Antonio Candreva and Federico Marchetti are likely to feature as well.  The absence of a left back may force Reja to play a three men defence with Vinicius likely to play on the left flank.

Giorgio Chiellini is Juventus’ only absentee and is likely to be replaced by either Martin Caceres or Angelo Ogbonna in the starting line-up
