EPL title to be decided on final day as Liverpool secure comeback win over Southampton

The Reds came back from a goal down to secure all the three points ahead of the final game of the season.

Liverpool have taken the Premier League title race to the final day after fighting back from a goal down to defeat Southampton on Tuesday night. The Reds came from behind to secure a 2-1 win at the St Mary's Stadium, hanging onto their slim hopes of completing the quadruple as the league enters its round.

Jurgen Klopp's decision to make nine changes to his squad from Saturday's penalty shootout victory against Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley was largely questioned, with just goalkeeper Alisson and center-back Ibrahima Konate being the ones to retain their place in the starting lineup.

It looked as though the choice of the German manager had backfired when Southampton opened the scoring through Nathan Redmond. The English winger gave the title contenders a nervy start by finding the back of the net after a deflection redirected his ball past Allisson.

Nevertheless, the lead only lasted momentarily, with Takumi Minamino firing home a powerful finish inside the 27th minute. Liverpool subsequently pushed for a winner and were awarded in the 67th minute when Joel Matip thumped home Kostas Tsimikas'

 Ahead of their last game of the season against Wolves, the Reds have 89 points from 37 Premier League outings and are just a point behind league leaders Manchester City. As a result, only a win over Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa will completely guarantee the Citizens a league trophy for the second successive season.
