Spurs will play their last home match of the year against Stoke City on December 29, 2013.Preview: Sherwood and Hughes contemplating victory at all cost

Tottenham Hotspur missed the opportunity to finish Matchday 18 above the Red Devils of Manchester United. Both teams have 31 points but Spurs’ dreadful defensive record (the worst in the top-half of the Premier League table with 24 goals conceded) puts them in eighth, one spot behind.

Mental power and aggressiveness inspired Spurs to a vital 3-2 win away to Southampton last weekend. But there was not much to cheer about on Boxing Day as the team failed to click in their 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion.

Dropping two points at White Hart Lane felt like “a kick in the privates,” according to new boss Tim Sherwood. In his post-match interview, the Spurs coach admitted:

“The fans will be disappointed, obviously. I understand that. We are at home and, with respect, against West Brom you should be winning.

“It's a game we should have won. We should have played better and we are capable of playing better.”

Tottenham Hotspur will have a final chance of triumphing on their own turf before the end of the year 2013. The game against Stoke City is one they will want to win at all cost – not only for the sake of the Premier League’s ranking but also to boost the moral ahead of their first two crucial fixtures in 2014, away to Manchester United in the league and Arsenal in the FA Cup.

Meanwhile, the Potters have been deeply wounded. They lost 5-1 to Alan Pardew’s dangerous Newcastle United and manager Mark Hughes is eager to bounce back. He was quoted as saying on the club’s official website

“We are exasperated by the events of Boxing Day, but we have another game coming our way very quickly which I think is a good thing for us.

“Obviously we will be without a few players now, but we still have players who have the quality to go to Tottenham and cause them a lot of problems.”

Adding to his warning to Spurs, Hughes concluded:

“It does hurt and it isn’t a fair reflection of the game on our players, but we will use our frustrations to our advantage and look to get the result we want in London on Sunday.”
