Preview: Black Cats eyeing morale-boosting win against the Blues
It’s a very miserable and tough period for Sunderland in the English Premier League and one can expect the Christmas period to be even colder. The Black Cats are firmly rooted at the bottom of the table with only nine points, four less than Crystal Palace and Fulham, and five behind seventeenth-placed West Ham United. As a result, Jose Mourinho shared the following piece of advice to Sunderland boss Gus Poyet:
“Gus is trying to avoid relegation so he has to play the kids from the academy in our game and keep the guys fresh for the next weekend [at home to Norwich City].”
Replying to the Special One, Poyet declared before the match:
“If I start thinking about Norwich, already it gets difficult to make decisions. But if we want to get out of the relegation zone, then we have to win matches, become winners.
“We want to win the cup game for that reason. Let's hope we can beat Chelsea, then we will be very confident for Norwich.”
What are Sunderland’s chances of upsetting the Blues in the Capital One Cup? Jose Mourinho is taking the competition seriously as it offers his side a better chance of clinching silverware than in the Premier League. Sunderland and Chelsea met earlier this month in an exciting clash that finished 4-3 in favour of the London giants. Are we in for a similar high-scoring encounter?
