Following a spirited comeback against Southampton which saw Chelsea scoring a 3-1 victory, the Blues now pay a visit to the Stadium of Light where they face Sundeland.

Sunderland and Chelsea will clash in the EPL on December 4, 2013Preview: Chelsea poised to continue fine form against Sunderland

After disappointing showings in consecutive games against Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion, Chelsea have finally returned to winning ways scoring back to back victories over West Ham and Southampton. They now face Sunderland, a side Chelsea have performed remarkably well against with the Blues having won their last eight top flight games against the Black cats.

Sunderland have seemed like an improved side under the management of Gus Poyet but are still in 19th place just one point adrift of table bottomers Crystal Palace and Chelsea will surely be looking to take advantage of their misery. The London side have an easy run of games and will be hoping to take it to their advantage by closing the gap between themselves and league leaders Arsenal. Away trips to Sunderland and Stoke will be followed by a home fixture against Crystal Palace and Chelsea will be disappointed not to pick nine points from their next three games.

With just four points separating the two London teams at the top, Jose Mourinho has stated that his side are serious title contenders and has encouraged his players to step up to the challenge. However the Portuguese tactician has refused to set targets for his players and has simply urged them to live up to the expectations also claiming that Chelsea’s next three games might not be as easy as they seem.

"If you are 10 or 12 points behind, you are building but you are not fighting for the title," the Portuguese manager told the press.

"If you are three, four or five behind, you are building evolution but fighting for the title. One of the things these boys have to learn is to cope with the responsibility of being there. We cannot be 15 points behind by December; we have to be there.”

"Now we have two matches away and, after that, we play Crystal Palace at home. We are playing against three teams which need points because of the positions they have and we are going to have three very difficult matches. I think my team is a team that prefers that I [don't] establish targets. I can't say now I want to win five consecutive matches, now I want to be top of the league. I want nothing. I just want to work with them and feed the young players."

With their season already in shambles, Gus Poyet’s arrival has been a breath of fresh air for Sunderland fans who have seen their side performing better under the Uruguayan. Under Poyet’s management Sunderland have scored victories in all three home games including a 1-0 win over Manchester City and the 46 year old tactician will be hoping to pull off another upset at the expense of his former club. In their last outing Sunderland held Aston Villa to a draw picking up only their second point away from home.

Poyet will have to do without skipper John O'Shea and goalkeeper Keiren Westwood who are suffering from groin and shoulder injuries respectively and have been deemed as major doubts for the match, Carlos Cuellar on the other hand has been ruled out of Wednesday’s encounter.

Brazilian midfielder Oscar limped off in the first half against Southampton due to an ankle injury but could recover in time, it will be interesting to see if Mourinho chooses to start Spanish star Juan Mata instead who produced a sublime performance as Chelsea defeated Southampton.

David Luiz and Samuel Eto’o will continue to remain on the sidelines for the Blues with Marco Van Ginkel the club’s only long term absentee.
