Preview: All Whites forced to play the game of their lives
Coach Miguel Herrera has earned great respect in Mexico for putting faith in local players and excluding foreign stars such as Giovani dos Santos and Chicharito from his squad. His team is in a great position to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, having demolished their opponents 5-1 at the Azteca last week.
Still, El Tri will push for yet another victory in the second leg as two-goal hero Oribe Peralta promised on Monday. He told reporters:
“I know that the score is large for us but we have to try to increase the advantage in the second leg to get the ticket to Brazil 2014.”
New Zealand skipper Tommy Smith has urged his team mates not to throw the towel even if World Cup qualification looks out of touch. Ruing the All Whites’ unimpressive display in the first leg, the captain declared:
“We have to get an early goal and put them on the back foot as soon as possible. With the result in Mexico, we felt like we let the fans down a little bit, so we just have to go all guns blazing and do as well as we can.”
The All Whites need a 4-0 miracle to turn the tables around and book a trip to Brazil in 2014.
