Defending European champions Bayern Munich welcome Viktoria Plzen to the Allianz Arena in a Champions League encounter on Wednesday, the 23rd of October 2013.

Bayern Munich are poised to win their third UEFA Champions League match in a row at home to Viktoria Plzen on October 23, 2013.Preview: Bavarians poised to make it three wins out of three

The German giants top Group D having won both their matches in a dominant fashion. A 3-0 mauling of CSKA Moscow was followed by a 3-1 drubbing of English side Manchester City. With City and CSKA unable to undermine the supremacy of last year’s treble winners, Viktoria Plzen are expected to be served the same fate.

Dutch star Arjen Robben will be looking for his sixth consecutive goal in Europe, if he succeeds in doing so he will be the fourth player to have achieved the feat, with Marouane Chamakh, Burak Yilmaz and Cristiano Ronaldo having done the same previously.

Robben’s partner in crime Franck Ribery who missed the 4-1 win against Mainz during the weekend, is likely to return to the side. The Frenchman was rested in an effort to avoid an aggravation of his ankle injury, but the 30 year old is likely to be fit for Wednesday’s clash.

“It is nothing serious and I wanted to play, but the doctor said it was too much of a risk,” he said according to ESPN.

Pep Guardiola however does have defensive worries and will have to field a make shift defence for the clash against Viktoria Plzen. Jerome Boateng will serve his suspension after being red carded in the match against Manchester City, whereas Brazilian star Dante who left the Allianz Arena in crutches after the weekend encounter against Mainz suffered a deep cut to his left ankle and will be unavailable for the Champions League game.

“I can’t say a lot," he said after the match.

"I don’t really know how it happened. And I don’t want to say anything more than that."

One player who will be expecting to start on Wedensday is former Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze. After a difficult period which kept him out due to injury, the 21 year old has returned in style.

After an inspirational display against Sweden for the national side, Bayern’s summer signing showed exactly why he is Europe’s hottest property when his 45 minute cameo against Mainz turned the game around for the hosts, who after going 1-0 down in the first half won the match 4-1.
Gotze who set up two goals and had a part to play in the third was happy with his overall contribution to the team and is targeting more playing time for his club.

“I’m naturally pleased. I just wanted to help the team,” said the 21 year old

“We were in a complicated position: Mainz basically stopped us making chances, and then we fell behind. We came up with much better solutions in the second half, we found gaps and we were more determined in front of goal.”

“The only thing that matters to me is to get back to playing for an extended period of time.”

Viktoria Plzen will be hoping to take advantage of the fact that Bayern will be without their first choice centre backs, but that said the Czech side have a herculean task to keep Bayern’s explosive attacking talents at bay.

Viktorka are currently second in the Czech league table six points behind leaders Sparta Prague but are undefeated in their last 11 league fixtures. The champions from Czech Republic have lost both their Champions League encounters against Manchester City and CSKA Moscow and will certainly not be in high spirits when they face a Bayern side which has demolished opposition after opposition.

Marian Cisovsky who missed both of Viktoria Plzen’s Champions League matches returned for the weekend encounter against Sparta Prague and is likely to start against the European champions. However full back David Limbersky, who has been out for almost a month will continue to nurse his thigh injury and will be unavailable for the match.
