Klopp issues update on Salah and Van Dijk after injury scare in FA Cup final

May 16, 2022 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The pair were substituted off before Liverpool defeated Chelsea via penalties on Saturday night.

Jürgen Klopp has revealed that Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah will be available for the Champions League final. The Liverpool boss said that the duo will miss Liverpool's trip to Southampton on Tuesday but may return for their final game of the Premier League final season against Wolves.

Before defeating Chelsea on penalties to secure their second domestic trophy of the season, Liverpool were forced to substitute both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. The former, who was replaced by Joel Matip in the 90th minute took an knock to his knee while the latter had an issue with his groin and had to make way for Diogo Jota in the 33rd minute.

The pair are expected to be absent when Liverpool travel to Southampton on Tuesday with the hope of getting within just a point of league leaders Manchester City. However, fans were worried that they may be unavailable to feature against Real Madrid in the Champions League final scheduled for May 28. With the Reds having already lost Fabinho to an injury that has ruled him out of the European cup final, the unavailability of the Salah and Van Dijk could pose a lot of trouble for their desire to become continental champions once more.

Ahead of Tuesday's clash with Southampton, Jurgen Klopp was asked about Salah and Van Dijk potentially being involved in the encounter. He said: "No. Virgil definitely not. That was pretty much clear before the game already. We thought this was the game [to rest him] because he played really a lot. Saturday-Tuesday again was clear.

"They are both OK. The target for both would be that they could be involved again at the weekend. Properly involved. On the bench and on for a few minutes or start – we will see with that because that would be perfect for the [Madrid] game. If not, we take each day afterwards. It is very positive and we have no doubt about the Champions League final but we are pretty realistic about the Wolves game. But tomorrow, not."
