English Premier League: How to watch Man City vs Newcastle live on May 8, 2022

May 7, 2022 By Ali M.
The Cityzens will host the Magpies just days after their embarrassing UEFA Champions League semifinal exit vs. Real Madrid.

Manchester City return to Premier League action just days after suffering European heartbreak, having crashed out of the UEFA Champions League despite having been on the cusp of the final. Nonetheless, Guardiola's men cannot afford to throw away another piece of silverware and must thus quickly shift focus back to the English top-flight as a showdown with Newcastle is on the horizon.

The fate of the weekend clash with the Magpies depends on how the Cityzens will react after Wednesday's embarrassment. De Bruyne and Co. were all but through to the UEFA Champions League final during their second leg semifinal showdown with Real Madrid, boasting a 1-0 lead (5-3 on aggregate) at the Bernabeu just as stoppage time was approaching.

Los Blancos needed two goals to draw the aggregate score line, hence why everyone believed City were through after Riyad Mahrez scored. Unfortunately, Rodrygo, who was thrown on as a late substitute to rescue the Spanish giants, did just that, netting twice in one minute to force the game into extra time.

The Premier League outfit were stunned and went on to concede a penalty in the first half of extra time, which Karim Benzema converted, thus becoming the goal that sent Pep's men packing. It was a collapse that will not be forgotten soon, with some Manchester City players being left emotional after the full-time whistle.

Fortunately for the home side, their form in the Premier League has been quite lovely and thus they can fall back upon that. The Cityzens are unbeaten in their last eight games, drawing two and winning the rest, and have suffered only two defeats in their last 25 Premier League outings.

Additionally, Liverpool, their one and only rival in the top-flight race, have dropped points, which will give them a tremendous boost. Klopp's men drew 1-1 at home to Tottenham on Saturday, meaning that while the Reds are level on points with De Bruyne and Co, this is merely temporarily as the Etihad Stadium side are yet to play. Beat Newcastle and City can move three points clear at the top with only three rounds left to play.

Unfortunately, Newcastle are no longer a dreadful team staring down at relegation. The Magpies have enjoyed a brilliant second half to the season, winning 10 out of their last 15 outings to climb out of the relegation battle. In fact, Howe's men were in the top half of the table and could leapfrog Crystal Palace in 10th with a win.

In this calendar year, Bruno and Co. have picked up a brilliant 32 points, only one short of Manchester City's record in 2022 (33), with only the Cityzens and Liverpool (41) enjoying a better year so far. Nonetheless, with the hosts keen on returning to winning ways, Newcastle will be in for a rough time.

The last time these two teams met was back in December, with that run-in ending in a disappointing 4-0 defeat for the St. James' Park crowd. There was a controversial incident regarding VAR and its failure to award the Magpies a penalty, but Newcastle were torn apart in that fixture nonetheless. Does a similar fate await Howe's men or will they get their revenge on Sunday? Tune in to find out.

Team news

Manchester City: Pep will be without John Stones and Kyle Walker for this tie, with the latter picking up an injury once again in the recent loss to Real Madrid. This means Cancelo will deputize in the right-back slot while Zinchenko will start on the left. Sterling and Grealish, both of whom came off the bench at the Bernabeu, will be hoping for a start.

Newcastle: Ryan Fraser, Isaac Hayden, Jamal Lewis and Fabian Schar are all injured for the visitors. Kieran Trippier has returned to training after fracturing his foot back in February, but whether he will feature remains unclear. Additionally, Callum Wilson has returned from injury and is back in contention.

Key stats
