Despite being a rare top club that is not constrained financially, Arsenal have seemed to develop quite a habit of missing out on key transfer targets over the years, a trend that needs much addressing.
For the past several weeks, Argentine international, Gonzalo Higuain has been hotly linked with a move to English Premier League outfit Arsenal. The Gunners have been keeping tabs on the Real Madrid striker for quite a long time but so far there has been no confirmation from both camps regarding reported gentleman’s agreement for a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Moreover, Madrid president, Florentino Perez has revealed that no offer has been made for the striker who is more of a replacement luxury at Santiago Bernabeu.

In short, things are starting to look bleak for Arsenal and the Higuain deal is rumoured to have fallen apart.

Rewind to around 24 months back and most of the Arsenal fans were going through a similar situation – elation, eagerness, confusion and then utter disappointment. Those were exactly the feelings that the ‘red’ side of London was oozing with during the whole Juan Mata saga.

The Spanish midfield maestro had been head and shoulders above the rest of his teammates at Valencia and was now looking to take another step in his career by joining a Premier League outfit where his talent would further hone. For weeks, the player was linked with a move to Arsenal and many tabloids went as far as suggesting that the player had already seen the facilities and would be signing for the club shortly.

The Spaniard was very keen on joining Arsene Wenger’s outfit and had already agreed to the move. Sadly, Valencia received no payment before the deadline for a rumoured buyout clause on his contract which meant that Los Che now wanted more than 18 million pounds that Arsenal had initially placed for the star player.

Failure to sign a player who was so eager to join the club meant that the board was left to face the backlash from disgruntled fans.
Today, it seems quite clear that the Arsenal board did not really learn much from that huge failure and is looking to procrastinate once again over a long term target who is apparently very keen on making the switch. Even the most optimistic of Gunners fan would point out that there are quite a lot of deficiencies that need to be looked at with a proven goal scorer being one of them.

The Londoners are in dire need of a keeper who is free from howlers and embarrassing moments, a midfielder who is willing to do the dirty work in midfield that most of the Arsenal players are never willing to do and a striker who has a proven record of scoring goals on a consistent basis.

For the last part, it is definitely Higuain who fits the bill even though a rather timid approach for Luis Suarez was made by the club a few days back. However, Higuain’s transfer has been stretched way more than it was necessary and it is about time for the Gunners to learn from their mistakes and not let their supporters wallow in despair the same way they did when Mata signed for Chelsea when his heart was set for a move to North London.

In a time when their rivals are making changes to their squads in the wee hours of the transfer window, Arsenal cannot afford to waste more time and need to sort out the house earlier rather than waiting for the dust to settle down.
