Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League semifinals showed once again why Jurgen Klopp is seen by many as the best manager in world football.
The German orchestrated a brilliant triumph over Unai Emery's underdogs, taking a 2-0 first leg triumph against a Yellow Submarine side with the sole intention of frustrating the Merseyside giants. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Premier League heavyweights were relentless and dominant, with an own goal and an effort from Sadio Mane securing them the triumph.
Straight after that game, the conversation quickly shifted to Jurgen Klopp's future at the club and whether the German will leave Anfield if the Reds were to secure the quadruple. His current contract ends in 2024, with several sources believing the former Dortmund boss would call it quits by then and take a one year sabbatical.
Fortunately, Liverpool fans have received a huge boost the day after that Villarreal victory as the legendary manager has reportedly signed a new deal at the club. This is according to David Ornstein of the Athletic, with the reliable British journalist claiming Jurgen has agreed to stay until 2026.
Mike Gordon, the president of Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group, was present at Anfield for the 2-0 win over Villarreal, as was Klopp's agent Marc Kosicke. Gordon made the trip to Merseyside to help contract negotiations with the 54-year-old, with the manager now committing to an additional two more years.
Klopp has always stated that the decision to remain at Liverpool past 2024 or to leave the club would depend on whether he had energy to continue leading the European giants. With the club chasing four trophies this season and new signings Ibrahima Konate and Luis Diaz exhibiting world-class promise, the German is said to have been "re-energized".
Additionally, the manager's closest staff have also reportedly committed to the Reds for another two more years. Klopp, who took over in 2015, has already led the Merseyside outfit to a UEFA Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup crown. This season, Salah and Co. are only one point behind English top-flight leaders Manchester City, have one foot in the European Cup final, have already lifted the Carabao Cup trophy, and are set to feature in the FA Cup final next month.
