Eight different countries have claimed the title. This term, in the absence of the tournament’s two most successful teams – six-time winners Argentina and current champions Brazil – every participant confidently wants to give a shot at clinching glory.

The United States of America finished bottom in the Group of Death with a single point - behind 2009 FIFA U-20 winners Ghana, Paul Pogba’s France and Gerard Deulofeu’s Spain.

Rivals Mexico had a better chance of progressing than the Americans. Indeed, the former made it out of Group D which contained the likes of Greece, Paraguay and African contenders Mali. They later fell to Spain in the Last 16. Meanwhile, in Group E, England U-20 could not survive the pressure. Like their country’s U-21 side at the Euro U-21 Championship in June, England U-20 crashed out in the group stages.

The 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup was composed of 24 teams from six confederations and placed in six groups. Only the four best among the third-ranked teams joined the top two of each section in the Round of 16. The semi-final stage was a happy story for eventual finalists France and Uruguay. One of these sides will claim gold while Ghana and Iraq will battle it out for bronze medals in the third-place match.
