Manchester United had a night to forget as they were humiliated by Liverpool, and in doing so, set a rather unwanted record

It was a night that Manchester United's players will look to forget in a hurry, and an evening that Red Devils fans worldwide will unfortunately recall for years to come.

The English giants suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss at the hands of a rampant Liverpool side, and with that defeat, are in increased danger of failing to qualify for the top four, which would guarantee them a spot in the Champions League next season.

Although they're only three points behind Tottenham, who sit in fourth, Spurs do have a game in hand that could play to their advantage as they aim to secure Champions League football for the next campaign.

But back to Manchester United: The Red Devils took on title contenders Liverpool on Tuesday evening in a match that was billed as an expected enthralling clash featuring two of England's "Big Six".

Although the visitors were dealt a major blow with star man Cristiano Ronaldo missing out following the tragic death of his newborn son, there were still hopes among fans and neutrals to see an entertaining tie, quite like the one featuring Tottenham and Manchester City a few rounds back.

Unfortunately for Red Devils supporters, it was a one-sided affair, as Manchester United shipped four goals sans reply, and in doing so, have now set an unpleasant record in the process.

Earlier this season, Liverpool came to Old Trafford and handed Manchester United a 5-0 defeat on their home turf. With yesterday's 4-0 loss, they've now conceded nine goals against the Reds in just two matches.

That's the most Manchester United have ever conceded against a single opponent in one season since the Premier League was created in 1992.

It's also their heaviest combined loss to an opponent since losing 11-0 home and away to Sunderland during the 1892/93 season - well over a century ago.

Next up for the Red Devils will be another away clash, this time against Arsenal. Given the Gunners' poor form as of late, Ralf Ragnick will hope to use this as an opportunity to get his team back on track as soon as possible.
